Conley runs with 1st with Wilson hurt

Chris Conley - WR - Chiefs
Chiefs third-round WR Chris Conley ran with the starting offense at Monday's practice.
With Albert Wilson (shoulder) hurt, Conley is getting his chance to run opposite Jeremy Maclin. Before Wilson even got hurt last week, he was having a really quiet camp and preseason while Conley caught 3-of-5 targets for 30 yards in his first action of the preseason over the weekend. Wilson has speed, but isn't very big. Conley (6'3/205) was a draftnik favorite as a metrics freak with 4.35 wheels, 45-inch vertical, and 11-foot-7 broad jump. He's in the mix for No. 2 duties.

Yeah, and Bryant too like Staylor suggested. Close. Though Bryant is bigger.

Because I see an elite deep threat who still has a long LONG way to go on his routes. It's interesting that they have both Bryant and Wheaton because to me, those are guys that kind of demonstrate my point.

Bryant may well end up being the more valuable of the two because his skill - deep ball stud - is so rare and so valuable that it may simply trump all else. But Wheaton has a more rounded skill-set and if both guys were street FAs and I was looking for one of those two to take the Z role in this offense, I'd take Wheaton.

So if I have Maclin on the team - I go with Bryant as a complementary deep threat. If I don't have Maclin, I go with Wheaton as a guy who's skills allow me a more developed overall passing game.

Conley is much more likely to be a player like Bryant than Wheaton, no? Do you believe that Bryant's skill set it inherently more valuable than Wheaton's? Or that Bryant could tailor his skills to do the same things Wheaton would do but better? I don't really see that.

If Conley ends up being Bryant, he's still a #2 WR and an incomplete player. That doesn't mean he isn't damn valuable.
Bryant is not smart (see 4 game ban). He also reportedly has to be motivated at practice.

Conley is smart and apparently doesn't have a work ethic issue

They measure explosion and quick twitch. Without those things a guy isn't going to be quick of the line. Whatever though.

You can argue for lower body explosion.....but quick twitch? Not even close.

You're wrong but that's O.K. This http://walterfootball.com/combine2015WR.php is interesting. It shows that Conley has a faster 10 yard split then Amari Cooper.

Jon Baldwin and his 44" vertical approve of your message.

Clearly a quick twitch athlete has his vertical suggests.

Yeah one guy who's vertical doesn't match his quicks is the end all be all of the conversation. Why do you think they do those tests for?

I can't understand why anyone is comparing Conley to Baldwin.

Baldwin, like Conley, had all the physical attribute of a great NFL wide receiver but had neither the desire or personality traits needed to succeed.

Conley, from all accounts, is smart and driven. If he fails at the NFL level, it'll be surprising.

I like Wilson, and I think he can play outside, but I'd like to see him more in the slot when Conley takes over outside.

Wilson is really good at cutting and getting separation in short areas.

There's generally a very strong positive relationship between 'explosion scores' (the combination of broad and vertical scores) and general quick twitch ability. But as with anything, there are exceptions to the rules.

But the fact that Conley had a faster 10 yard split than Cooper perfectly demonstrates the point that I think we're both trying to make. If ANYONE tries to argue that Conley has as much functional quickness as Cooper, they're simply watching the wrong sport. It's not even close.

But the way Cooper gets his speed is much different and in the end, more useful for most things.

Quickness isn't just about how much ground you cover while running straight; it's about how quickly you stop, how you stop, how you turn, how you carry your speed through cuts, etc...

Giving me Conley's 10 yard split doesn't tell me how functionally quick he is - it just tells me that the dude has a really long stride. That's where just watching him comes into play. Conley shouldn't expected to be anywhere near Cooper, stopwatches be damned. And in the end, your eyes definitely confirm that.

They are the last 2 WR's drafted by the Chiefs in which the hype has been a hair overboard.

Comparison is unavoidable.

At least Conley isn't getting dropped into a Pioli/Cassel/Patriots Way AIDS bath.

Different tests for different things. Vertical is usually indicative of lower body explosion. Cone drill is a much better test for quickness.

Yeah but Baldwin didn't fail because of his athleticism, he failed because he was mentally weak and didn't want it.

By all accounts, that separates him from Baldwin, making any comparison moot.

Baldwin was a slow plodder. He didn't have the physical tools to succeed in this league. He was just a big guy who can jump high.

The comparison is brought up because Phil claims that leaping ability correlates to a player's shiftyness.

His athleticism had a lot do with with his failure. Watching that guy do a double move was awful.

He didn't have the quickness to get open against NFL DB's. He ran like goofy TE.
