Restaurants of yesteryear
What Restaurants did you grow up around? I'm not talking super fancy and yes fast-food counts. What distinctive memories do you associate with them?

Mine?

Taco Via-(the lit up menu of the various taco plates displayed on the wall), WhiteCastle-On a paper plate with fries and Pepsi, Arthur Treachers(off Noland), Tippins(off Noland), Perkins(the free toy well), Country Deli(awesome local deli to Blue Springs heated sandwiches on Sourdough buns), Zarda BBQ and Dairy, FunHouse Pizza(of Course)(Dark. Video- Games,Electonic Riding Bull and 25-cent Taco night) Annes Sante Fe.

Keep in mind I never see these anymore living in Georgia.

I miss Checkers, Rally's in most places, but amazing Fries and Burgers, was in Merrian off of Shawnee Mission Pkwy. Last time I had them was in New Jersey 10 years ago at a Rally's.

Speaking of great roast beef, used to love going over to Rax’s Roast Beef off of Nolan Road. It was probably actually shitty roast beef, but in my kid mind it was awesome! Loved the little alligator mascot. Would always get the Rax Roast Beef Deluxe.

And I saw Taco Via mentioned in the OP. Absolutely LOVED Taco Via growing up. We used to make my mom drive me and a buddy over to Blue Springs on Friday nights to eat there when I was a kid. I remember popping lots of quarters playing Double Dragon over there with my buddy before dinner was served. Fun times.

There’s still one in Lee’s Summit and I try and go by every so often when I’m in town visiting friends and family.

Ahh, to be 11 again . . . . . . .

I found this the other day.



When I was a kid my uncle (not my real uncle, more like a grandfather figure) took me to every boat, RV, car show, sporting event he went to. After each event he would take me(in his new deuce and a quarter) out for fancy meals at places where everyone knew his name. There were several places that I now now were mob hangouts. When I saw this list, I realized he had taken me to every one.

I lived on 38th on the west side of the trafficway. I practicly lived on the corner where Nichols was. Used to be a good bar (don't remember name), King Henry's Feast, and a great barbershop to keep up with the neighborhood buzz. There was a night manager, Frank? that always let me now if the daily special was special. I never cooked very often back then.

Back to great places, here is a flash from the past.

John Wollam and Katey McGuckin (before her KY102 fame) owned the place.

Randy did some kick ass stained glass and was only out done by Smoke Stack for kewl shit to look at while dining. I wonder what Karen looks like after 2 kids.

I remember Sam Wilson's Meat Market (the bar lived up to the name) as a great "all in one" date place. Remember Dick and Jay on the weekends?
