Washing Machine troubles

We've been having issues with our drain overflowing. I've poured acid pellet stuff and drano into it throughout the year. We had a new drain pipe installed all the way to the main house line early spring last year.

Today it overflowed so I poured drano down it. I then used the hot water line down the drain almost on full blast, with no drain problems. First load and it overflows.

Any ideas?

Besides AIDS.

There might be one, it's been awhile since I've looked up there on that side.

If there isn't one, that is my problem then?
If the drain line isn't vented, it has an effect like when you put your finger over a straw.

Its not necessarily near your washing machine. Its a sewer vent pipe that vents gases up and out through the roof. get on the roof and it will be the vent that smells of sewage. if that is blocked it can be dangerous as methane gas can get into your house. If there is blockage in that vent it will require a plumber to auger it unless you want to haul a 300 lbs sewer line auger up to your roof. get a flashlight or mirror if its a shiny day and look down that pipe stack you see water moving freely and not standing. do you use toilet wet wipes or worse toilet cleaner wipes they are notorious for clogging things up. squirrels have been known to get curios and crawl down and not able to get out and clogging it. If thats not it check washer drain line make sure a sock or something hasnt clogged it and it rises up above tubs waterline then down int drain. After that i dunno.

Ok thanks. Guess I'll summon up the courage to get on my roof and look. There are a couple pvc pipes coming out, with one of them being my furnace pipe. I've always wondered why there was more than one pvc pipe coming out of my roof. Maybe one is the drain vent.

We rarely, well I rarely throw baby wipes down the toilet. My wife, I'll have to ask.

She does have a huge problem with letting her hair slow the tub. Drives me nuts.

Take a pic tomorrow and post it. Then it can be figured out which pipe is which.

Water heaters usually have a round cap on the exhaust pipe. The sewer is usually open.
It could have a birds nest in it.

If you have a newer furnace, the exhaust is usually on the side of the house. PVC.

Take some pebbles up there with you. Drop 1 down the stack and listen for it to hit the bottom of the stack. If you hear water, that's the stack. Lots of plumbers will however re-vent the stacks (tie multiple vents together) to cut down the number of roof penetrations, so getting to that drain may not be possible from the roof. Your blockage is more than likely at the fitting that connects the washer drain to the main drain . your best and easiest solution here is to have a plumber rod out the line. It'll cost you around $150, but you'll be up and running in under an hour and can go on with your life

What about one of those balls that screw on the end of a hose and inflate with water pressure, then blows the line out?

They work if you have a complete blockage. It sounds like his is a partial one, which means he probably won't get enough pressure to clear it. The best way to clear the pipes of build up is with a sewer machine

Heh. Boy, I wish I'd shot our old washer. It died while the wife was doing laundry one day, and our laundry room is on the second floor (awesomely convenient, until disaster strikes). Holy shit. Flooded the better part of the second floor and a good chunk of the first floor. Water was pouring out of the kitchen light fixtures like it was flowing out of a bathtub spigot. We had about $5,000 worth of damage - thank God for insurance. Also, thank God my wife was in the kitchen when it happened and was able to shut the damned thing off and secure the water flow immediately.

I was at work that day. By the time I got home the remediation team had already come and gone. I'll never forget the experience of opening the door and seeing the destruction. I actually just turned around and went back in the garage for a couple of minutes. Too bad nobody was there to take a picture of me - the expression on my face must have been epic.

But in the end, it turned out to be a good thing - the new carpet and flooring looks much nicer than the old crap that got destroyed.

Before

After
