2002 Explorer Timing Chain replacement

My son ran his explorer low on oil and contributed to his front timing chain to fail. I have looked at parts and R&R suggestions etc. but have a few questions of anyone who has done this repair.
I am intending to replace the main tensioner for the jack shaft as well as the front cassette and timing chain.

The truck is only worth 3-4k max and don't see pulling the engine to replace the rear cassette and chain unless I can replace the rear cassette without pulling the engine.

Is there any option besides the ford tool for holding the cams.
How necessary is it to remove the oil pan looking for debris. The chain broke and I assume it shredded the cassette as well as knocked a hole in the valve cover.

Any other things to consider?

If the nylon guide shredded the oil pan should come off. If not the oil pickup could get blocked and then the motor goes.

Years ago I would lock a set of vice grips on the cam so it wouldn't move. Now I just have acquired most tools needed. some are ****ing expensive

Rear has to have the engine pulled.

It calls for about 22 hours to replace all 4 chains if it's a 4x4. I'm putting a new motor in a 2008 with the supposedly redesigned chains, it failed at 117k and put a hole in the head and metal everywhere. Reman motor hopefully shows up Monday.

It's the third one I've seen in the last two months.

Any idea if I can drop the pan enough to clean it with the motor in the truck.
l haven't checked a shop for cost he wants to do it himself if it would cost over 1000, which means I do it and answer questions along the way.

Yeah, I think the whole job to replace all the chains and gaskets was over 1500 and I'm in the sticks, labor isn't near what it is most places
