Paramount just released the trailer to Star Trek Beyond. I am less than pleased overall.

Justin Lin, the director of the last 3 F&F movies, is at the helm of this bullshit and from the tiny snippet of Simon Pegg jumping out of a pod and hanging off the side of a cliff... it looks equally as campy as F&F.

Justin Lin, the director of nothing but remakes and sequels, is also the guy in charge of the reshooting (because there won't be anything new about it) of the Highlander movie.

I love Trek but this new movie series has been largely garbage. Little to no rewatchability at all for either movie. For the first time ever... I am more excited for something Star Wars related than Trek.

As a lifelong trek nerd, I liked it.

It's in the new canon so there's going to be the over done action elements, but it had a good mix of humor and throw back adventure. And the Beastie Boys Sabotage thing was actually pretty fun. Had a nice couple of nods to the original crew.

It was a fun Trek movie.

It wasn't awful. If you're a Trek fan, you'll like it. If you're not a Trek fan, you won't. Good FX, good character interaction, story is pretty simple and contained so it feels more like a TOS episode. Cinematography sucks, all the action is too frenetic, underexposed, and hard to follow; could've benefitted by moving the camera back five feet in every shot (and I saw it on an IMAX screen where everything was bigger, so I can't imagine how bad it is on a small screen). I loved the reboot film and am one of the few who didn't hate "Into Darkness" so I was okay with this film but it's pretty much more of the same and won't change anyone's world.

I didn't think the action shots were that bad on a small screen. My biggest issue was the sound mix, but I just chalked that up to the theater.

Front to back, I enjoyed it more than ITD. Like you, I didn't hate that one (when viewing it as it's own movie and not as a blatant ripoff of Space Seed and WoK. In fact liked it. But when I watch ITD again, I usually stop after the Vengeance crashes into San Fran. It just gets labored after that.

This one was superior as an overall movie to Darkness.

Star Trek Beyond—Trek by numbers is no Trek at all
Bones shines and some action scenes rule, but it's all ruined by zero-stakes plot.

The newest Star Trek film—if you're counting, it's the 13th in the series and third in the reboot timeline—opens with a modern take on the '60s TV series' Tribbles. A tribunal of CGI creatures, which look like a cross between Muppets and the Murloc specimens from World of Warcraft, surround James T. Kirk and argue over his latest diplomatic gesture. It's classic Trek. Kirk wheels and deals, making sense of a newly discovered world, and he clearly keeps one eye out for plan B. He's a modern conquistador, flashing a smile and proving likable when the weird scene doesn't pan out his way.

It's a good start for Star Trek Beyond. But if you find yourself hating the film by its end, you can blame this opening—a cute, energetic, and personality-loaded scene when isolated—for getting your hopes up about Justin "Fast & Furious" Lin's first directorial take on Trek. More so than the other reboot films, Star Trek Beyond does the series a great disservice by focusing on the known and thus leaving discovery, personality, and stakes in the dust.

I liked it, but didn't love it. It had that "almost, but not quite" feel to it. There were too many "suspend your belief" moments, even for a Trek movie. I can see why the hardcore Trekkie would be pissed about this movie. But all that said, it was a decent to good popcorn flick.

Just try not to think about why an installation the size of Yorktown wouldn't have a fleet on station for protection (especially butted up against a nebula where there was nothing known about what was beyond it), or why Krall had technology like he did at his disposal and hadn't invaded decades earlier, or if Krall's armada was manned by the Franklin crew or the untold number of ships that he had assimilated, or if Starfleet allowed the bio super weapon to just float around in proximity to Yorktown, or if they gathered/destroyed it, and you'll be fine.

Just saw it. Liked it. Dragged a little in the middle. Otherwise my favorite of the three reimagined ones. Some logic holes like Bowser pointed out, but a fun two hours all-in-all. Definitely no connection with any of the previous (old school ST...) movies.

And also as someone earlier mentioned, they had a nice nod to the TOS crew. I thought that was well done by Pegg and Co. in that scene.

I liked it -- well worth the price of admission. The sound was not great, but that may have been the theater. I didn't have a problem following the action scenes, save a couple minor instances that didn't really matter to me. The movie hit a lot of familiar tropes, but that's what I expect from a franchise film, nothing revolutionary. Frankly, I was impressed that Lin did as well as he did, I expected more of a drop off with things being handed off to a new director.

It does drag a little in the middle as everyone has said. I think my biggest complaint is that the script has a theme that is very much worthy of a star trek film, but the action doesn't bear out the lesson. The theme is about the strength of unity, and disruption of unity is the weapon that gets the job done, but at the same time, the federation never takes responsibility for its callousness at casting crews out to the unknown with no recourse. If the intent was to show that the sacrifice is truly understood by the federation, I think they left some resolution out of that. Clearly they showed crews understand the risks they are taking, but I also felt like Kirk was looking for more meaning and it would have resolved better to have him make a harder choice at the end, not just a "time constraint on a task" action ending.

I did enjoy it though. This summer has been pretty lame so it gets bonus points for not flat out sucking.

Star Trek: Beyond was not a complete pile of garbage as I was expecting and certainly better than Into Darkness.

It was, though, a Fast and the Furious movie set in space. There was little to nothing Trek about it. What the hell was this movie going to be without the reshoots?

I give it a 3 of 10 as a Trek film and a 8 of 10 for just mindless entertainment.

Great flick! Loved it. But mainly because I love this cast and their interaction together.

It was basically wall to wall action with about 10 minutes of setup and reflection tacked on in the beginning and end.
