Agree to everything outside of the 'losing his spot in the rotation.' That's why I set it at 140 IP. If he pitches over 140 IP, I assume he's pitching well, so I assume his ERA is going to be under 4. I don't think we'd be married to a guy who has a 5 ERA for more than 100 innings or so

That's the way I took your post as well. He will either be over 4, or he will pitch 140+ innings...or neither. He likely won't do both, though.

I can't envision us running a guy out there very long if he has a 5.5 ERA despite the fact we have a pitcher's park and the best defense in the majors (and #2 isn't close).

Any luck Volquez might have had last year is immediately cancelled out by the fact our defense is SO good and our ballpark is tough.

I read something that said their infield defense was better than ours, and their park (pirates) was more pitcher friendly than ours

That doesn't seem fair. If he gets torched then he's losing his spot, which would mean I was right about him.

well I forget what started the entire debate but I think there are two reasonable expectations from Volquez, and I don't think there is anything in between

I think he's either going to be a steal, post a 3.5 - 4 ERA, and pitch about 200 innings.

Or he's going to flat out bomb.

I think he's better than Jeremy Guthrie. And, with our defense and ballpark, I can't see us having a regular starter in our rotation that has an ERA above 4.25 without risking losing his job.

However, I will take your bet, because I love to gamble, and alnorth can arbitrate.

Ned is fine. His only flaw is the bullpen, IMO, and when you have Hoch/Herrera/Davis/Holland it's pretty hard to **** up

KC SPs only have to pitch 5 innings in 2015.

After that's it's Hoch, Herrera, Davis and Holland.

I don't think our back of the rotation guys even need to be under 4. That's what I liked about the Vargas signing, he usually averages about a 4.00 ERA. If you pitch 6 innings and give up 3 runs every game that's a 4.50 ERA. We can win a lot of games that way with our bullpen.

Understood, but they can't pitch everyday? And Hoch is unproven, as far as that goes.
