Extremely painful/beautiful for anyone that's lost someone to cancer or an illness.
Bittersweet - Zac Brown Band Can't tell where the sky begins and the water ends No clouds to hide the sun Waves playing me a symphony upon the sand I lay drifting on the ocean with this bottle in my hand Sat down on the boardwalk for a little while Your memory my company Something about this place had a way to make you smile You always loved the sound of the waves. The wind whistling across my bottle still can't blow away the sorrow That tomorrow you won't be here with me So I raise it up and toast the day we met I won't forget the way you love me, the amazing way you love me It's bittersweet, you see You're not here but I can feel you Every memory is on the tip of my tongue Close my eyes, see your face, hold on tight to yesterday Praying when I wake, it was just a dream It's bittersweet Doctor said there's nothing we can do Took my hand said take me home To the only place with half a chance to take the pain away Make me feel alive before I go You said life is only borrowed So let's wash away our sorrow That tomorrow I won't be here with you Go and live your life with no regrets and don't forget how much I love you I love you It's bittersweet, you see You're not here but I can feel you Every memory is on the tip of my tongue Close my eyes, see your face, hold on tight to yesterday Praying when I wake, it was just a dream It's bittersweet I brought you back just like you wanted So you don't ever have to leave And when I poured you across the southern sky, I couldn't help but to cry I know you finally got your wings |

Look up here, I’m in heaven
I’ve got scars that can’t be seen I’ve got drama, can’t be stolen Everybody knows me now Look up here, man, I’m in danger I’ve got nothing left to lose I’m so high it makes my brain whirl Dropped my cell phone down below Ain’t that just like me By the time I got to New York I was living like a king Then I used up all my money I was looking for your ass This way or no way You know, I’ll be free Just like that bluebird Now ain’t that just like me Oh I’ll be free Just like that bluebird Oh I’ll be free Ain’t that just like me Lazarus - David Bowie. Hmm best song lyrics well if there is best song lyrics then we should have a worst song lyrics thread.
I'd go with ~Have you ever seen the rain? Of course I've seen the rain, who hasn't seen the rain? I mean it's raining right now as it's rained about every month this year rain rain rain. Did the writer live in the Sahara? That song really annoys the hell out of me.

A Pirate Looks At Forty by Jimmy Buffett
Mother, mother ocean, I have heard you call Wanted to sail upon your waters since I was three feet tall You've seen it all, you've seen it all Watched the men who rode you switch from sails to steam And in your belly you hold the treasures few have ever seen Most of them dream, most of them dream Yes I am a pirate, two hundred years too late The cannons don't thunder, there's nothing to plunder I'm an over-forty victim of fate Arriving too late, arriving too late I've done a bit of smuggling, I've run my share of grass I made enough money to buy Miami, but I pissed it away so fast Never meant to last, never meant to last And I have been drunk now for over two weeks I passed out and I rallied and I sprung a few leaks But I got to stop wishing, got to go fishing, down to rock bottom again Just a few friends, just a few friends I go for younger women, lived with several a while Though I ran them away, they'd come back one day Still could manage to smile Just takes a while, just takes a while Mother, mother ocean, after all the years I've found My occupational hazard being my occupation's just not around I feel like I've drowned, gonna head uptown I feel like I've drowned, gonna head uptown

Not full lyrics, just my favorite part: We don't do the jumping, shotgun start the pumping See him slipping, I'm a dump it Kill a ****a then we dump 'em Throw his body in a dumpster Spin through like, ay He moving or walk, he get shot in the face I heard they dropping the rakes Well we got the addy and we on the way Swerving, lurking, slip then murk 'em Purge with burners, it's a murder Hearse him, put him in the dirt They got his face prints on a shirt Hop out, strap drawn, head tap Tryna run, he ain't get that far Spin through, two shooters, one driver We gon' kill that boy We gon' bend that block, we gon' You gon' hear that noise (you gon' here that shit) All we know is dead opps, no attempts at leg shots Hit him in his head top

[Verse 1]
The sirens are screaming and the fires are howling Way down in the valley tonight There's a man in the shadows with a gun in his eye And a blade shining oh so bright There's evil in the air and there's thunder in sky And a killer's on the bloodshot streets Oh and down in the tunnel where the deadly are rising Oh, I swear I saw a young boy down in the gutter He was starting to foam in the heat [Pre-Chorus] Oh, baby you're the only thing in this whole world That's pure and good and right And wherever you are and wherever you go There's always gonna be some light But I gotta get out, I gotta break it out now Before the final crack of dawn So we gotta make the most of our one night together When it's over, you know we'll both be so alone [Chorus] Like a bat out of hell I'll be gone when the morning comes Oh, when the night is over Like a bat out of hell I'll be gone gone gone Like a bat out of hell I'll be gone when the morning comes But when the day is done and the sun goes down And the moonlight's shining through Then like a sinner before the gates of Heaven I'll come crawling on back to you [Verse 2] I'm gonna hit the highway like a battering ram On a silver black phantom bike When the metal is hot and the engine is hungry And we're all about to see the light Nothing ever grows in this rotting old hole Everything is stunted and lost And nothing really rocks and nothing really rolls And nothing's ever worth the cost And I know that I'm damned if I never get out And maybe I'm damned if I do But with every other beat I've got left in my heart You know I'd rather be damned with you If I gotta be damned, you know I wanna be damned Dancing through the night with you Well If I gotta be damned you know I wanna be damned (gotta be damned you know I wanna be damned) Gotta be damned you know I wanna be damned (gotta be damned you know I wanna be damned) Gotta be damned you know I wanna be damned (gotta be damned you know I wanna be damned) Dancing through the night (dancing through the night) Dancing through the night (dancing through the night) Dancing through the night with you (dancing through the night) [Pre-Chorus] Oh, baby you're the only thing in this whole world That's pure and good and right And wherever you are and wherever you go There's always gonna be some light But I gotta get out, I gotta break it out now Before the final crack of dawn So we gotta make the most of our one night together When it's over, you know we'll both be so alone [Chorus] Like a bat out of hell I'll be gone when the morning comes When the night is over Like a bat out of hell I'll be gone, gone, gone Like a bat out of hell I'll be gone when the morning comes But when the day is done and the sun goes down And the moonlight's shining through (Oo-oo-ooh) Then like a sinner before the gates of Heaven I'll come crawling on back to you Then like a sinner before the gates of Heaven I'll come crawling on back to you [Bridge] Oh, I can see myself tearing up the road Faster than any other boy has ever gone And my skin is raw, but my soul is ripe And no one's gonna stop me now I'm gonna make my escape But I can't stop thinking of you And I never see the sudden curve 'til it's way too late And I never see the sudden curve 'til it's way too late [Outro] Then I'm dying at the bottom of a pit in the blazing sun (ooh) Torn and twisted at the foot of a burning bike (ooh) And I think somebody somewhere must be tolling a bell (aah) And the last thing I see is my heart still beating I'm breaking out of my body and flying away Like a bat out of hell Then I'm dying at the bottom of a pit in the blazing sun Oh, torn and twisted at the foot of a burning bike And I think somebody somewhere must be tolling a bell (ooh) And the last thing I see is my heart still beating, still beating I'm breaking out of my body and flying away Like a bat out of hell Oh, like a bat out of hell Oh, like a bat out of hell Oh, like a bat out of hell (I'll be gone when the morning comes) Like a bat out of hell (I'll be gone when the morning comes) Like a bat out of hell (ooh, ooh)

Alright then, picture this if you will:
10 to 2 am, X, Yogi DMT And a box of Krispy Kremes In my "need to know" pose, just outside of Area 51 Contemplating the whole "Chosen People" thing when just a flaming Stealth banana split the sky like one would hope But never really expect to see in a place like this Cutting right angle donuts on a dime and Stopping right at my Birkenstocks, and me yelping... "Holy ****ing shit!" Then the X-Files being, Looking like some kind of blue-green Jackie Chan with Isabella Rossellini lips and Breath that reeked of vanilla Chig Champa Did a slow-mo Matrix descent out of the butt end of the banana vessel And hovered above my bug-eyes, my gaping jaw, And my sweaty L. Ron Hubbard upper lip and all I could think was: "I hope Uncle Martin here doesn't Notice that I pissed my ****in' pants." So light in his way Like an apparition He had me crying out "**** me It's gotta be Deadhead Chemistry The blotter got right on top of me Got me seein' E-mother****in'-T!" And after calming me down with some Orange slices and some fetal spooning E.T. revealed to me his singular purpose He said, "You are the Chosen One The One who will deliver the message A message of hope for those who choose to Hear it and a warning for those who do not." Me. The Chosen One? They chose me! And I didn't even graduate from ****in' high school You better You better You better You better listen Then he looked right through me With somniferous almond eyes Don't even know what that means Must remember to write it down This is so real Like the time Dave floated away See my heart is pounding 'Cause this shit never happens to me Can't breathe right now! It was so real Like I woke up in Wonderland All sort of terrifying And I don't wanna be all alone when I tell this story And can anyone tell me why You all sound like Peanut's parents? Will I ever be coming down? This is so real Finally, it's my lucky day See my heart is racing 'Cause this shit never happens to me Can't breathe right now! You believe me, don't you? Please believe what I just said See, the Dead ain't tourin' and this wasn't all in my head See they took me by the hand and invited me right in Then they showed me something I don't even know where to begin Strapped down my bed. Feet cold and eyes red I'm out of my head, am I alive or am I dead? Can't remember what they said Goddamn. Shit the bed! Overwhelmed as one would be, placed in my position Such a heavy burden now to be the One Born to bear and read to all The details of our ending To write it down for all the world to see But I forgot my pen Shit the bed again Typical Strapped down in my bed. Feet cold and eyes red I'm out of my head, am I alive or am I dead? Sunkist and Sudafed, gyroscopes and infrared Can't remember what they said Goddamn. Shit the bed! I can't remember what they said to me Can't remember what they said to make me out to be a hero! Can't remember what they said Bob help me Can't remember what they said Don't know, won't know... Goddamn shit the bed! |

My first thought was Synchronicity II, from The Police's 1983 album Synchronicity, written by String. It's the story of a desperately unhappy white collar worker being pushed to the brink, told from the perspective of one of his children, interspersed with imagery of a monster rising from the depths of a distant lake approaching a nearby cottage. Thought it was brilliant when I was 17. Still think it's brilliant today.
Another suburban family morning. Grandmother screaming at the wall. We have to shout above the din of our Rice Crispies We can't hear anything at all. Mother chants her litany of boredom and frustration, But we know all her suicides are fake. Daddy only stares into the distance There's only so much more that he can take. Many miles away something crawls from the slime At the bottom of a dark Scottish lake. Another industrial ugly morning The factory belches filth into the sky. He walks unhindered through the picket lines today, He doesn't think to wonder why. The secretaries pout and preen like cheap tarts in a red light street, But all he ever thinks to do is watch. And every single meeting with his so-called superior Is a humiliating kick in the crotch. Many miles away something crawls to the surface Of a dark Scottish loch. Another working day has ended. Only the rush hour hell to face. Packed like lemmings into shiny metal boxes. Contestants in a suicidal race. Daddy grips the wheel and stares alone into the distance, He knows that something somewhere has to break. He sees the family home now looming in his headlights, The pain upstairs that makes his eyeballs ache. Many miles away there's a shadow on the door Of a cottage on the shore Of a dark Scottish lake Many miles away |

Simon and Garfunkel also had some songs with amazing lyrics. The two that really stand out to me are Sound of Silence and The Boxer.
These clips are from a concert they did in 2009 that must have been damned near magical to experience in person. Paul and Art have known each other since they were kids and have famously annoyed the **** out of each other for over half a century, but they truly seemed to enjoy themselves and each others' company on this night. Enjoy. |
