Well, SF was near the bottom of the league in passing. They can still move the ball because of Gore and their line, and Kaepernick puts up numbers against average and below average teams. But he's not a good enough QB to be your franchise.

On the Mathews penalty play

Boldin is able to secure the catch as he is hit and break another tackle to gain 20 YAC.
