Free Safety Play 2013 vs 2014

Now that the season is done and the stats are in the books, how much did the play of the FS change the look of the defense in 2014?

We all know Kendrick Lewis was ass. We all thought you could replace Lewis with some schmuck and we'd be better. Well, guess what? We replaced him with some schmuck and by God, we were better.

How much did replacing Lewis lead to the great performances of the D? Surely it wasn't ALL of the improvement. I think Sean Smith deserves a lot of credit. Dude was ****ing solid in coverage all year. I think our passrush was better, certainly compared to what it was after Houston and Hali got hurt. And Sutton surely deserves some credit. I think not having to rely on Cooper was a pretty significant improvement.

But by the same token, there were a lot fewer long runs after the catch by everybody. And even runs that got to the second level were covered pretty well (except that ****ing Faid run ). I think that has a lot to do with play at the free safety.

So what say you? How big a difference was having Parker, Coleman, et. al. back there versus Lewis?

Top 10 defense and #2 against the pass, didn't give up a single 300 yard passing game this season.

Hell yes! And without Brandon Flowers. It wasn't just Kendrick Lewis imo. Dorsey made the right move in cutting Flowers and getting the guys in there that Sutton wanted.

Why throw the ball when you can run at will like the Raiders did.

The Chiefs did an excellent job with the secondary. They went from 2 good players (Flowers, Berry) and a bunch of shit to a solid secondary that is 4-deep at corner and can legitimately play 3-safety sets when healthy. That means we added 5 players who can contribute.

But CP will ignore it because it wasn't a need (even though it was our biggest bitching point in 2013) and it wasn't OL (even though we bitch every time we draft one).

Anyone notice that NO team with a shitty run defense made the playoffs? I think the Packers had the worst with the 23rd ranked rush defense.

Of all the reasons the Chiefs didn't make the playoffs, I'd put that very far from the top.

Also the Steelers, Packers, Colts, and Panthers are all Bottom 10 as far as YPC goes.

But what difference does that make if we don't give up any points?

Gaines is young... He will get better... My sons and I were talking about Sean Smith's play being very good all year. He got beat pretty frequently last year, not this one.

Solid in coverage but not the playmakers you want to have that will blow someone up in the middle of the field or get picks. They don't play the run very well especially if they put Parker in the box.

They didn't give up the big play, but they didn't make them either.

Overall, they need to bring Parker back and have him hit the jugs machine.

They should bring back Kurt Coleman, too. Although the team probably still really like Sanders Commings.

Commings will probably get hurt watching Parker work the jugs machine.
