Job Advice On Postion Offered

So I applied for an open position with a company. As part of the application I gave my minimum accepted salary. When I received a phone call from them to set up an interview I asked what range they were looking to pay. Their answer: "I haven't looked yet but we are within range of what you put down for your minimum or we wouldn't have called"

Okay, fair enough. So I go to the interview. At the end of the interview I ask the HR person, "what range are you looking to pay?". I get the same answer of we have to pull numbers and this and that but what you are asking for is within our range. Again, fair enough.

Today I get an offer 10% below what I stated as my minimum accepted and told that is the highest they can go because the position is that and not that.

So I'm kinda like, WTF happened to "within range"? I asked twice on two separate occasions what they were looking to pay and both times I was lead to believe what I stated as a minimum was close to an acceptable level. I understand coming in initially below my stated minimum but this sounds kinda shitty, really.

Worth negotiating? I do want the position but I am not hurting nor in desperate need for it either.

Yeah, those long lists of skills desired are almost funny. Like they are just throwing shit against a wall and see what techs they get. You can usually filter out whats important to the employer. I'm always clear about on-call responsibilities. That shit will bite you in the ass.

I've already have a Chiefs group established down here. Most are KU fans also. Just saying.....

I'm not saying that there is not a time to talk about the money. What I am saying is the initial contact is not that time.

That being said, they offered you something. Counter their offer, explain why you are worth more, fight for your 10%. Show them that you want to be part of their company and why you are worth the added investment.

The real question is are you asking for a reasonable wage? If so explain sol

IMO, that conversation could tell you a whole lot about the company you desire to work for.
I know for a fact that what I am asking for is no where near the top end of the pay range for that position.

Yeah, that one was pretty absurd... granted, one thing I really like about my job is that I get to dive into as many technologies as I want, the trade off of course is that it takes that much longer to become an expert at any one of them. I have worked with a few people who seemed qualified for one of those lists, or at least can dive in and retain a ton of information in a short period of time... give them something to do and in a few hours they'll know more about it than you do... just a freaky level of intelligence.

Well, I do slowly seem to be coming more tolerant of the heat/humidity around here every summer that goes by, so maybe it's just a matter of time...

Honestly LinkedIn is the best place to have contacts and get the jobs you are looking for. Most companies these days look at LinkedIn first....especially if they are looking for experience and industry contacts.

And someone mentioned Glass Door....to me, it is like CareerBuilder and Monster, a little behind the times. Most of the job hunters I know are using either LinkedIn or Indeed.com if they aren't already on a Headhunters radar already.

I mentioned Glass Door but not for networking or job leads, more for research. I had a pretty good idea when I applied for my current job what they would start out at based solely on that.

If you jumped through the hoops of the interview process, didn't come across as some maniacal money grubber(which you obviously didn't) and they offered you the position, I would negotiate salary. Don't take it personal (as many here suggest) because it is just business.

I assume you were not prepared to negotiate salary as you told them your low dollar as that. In the era of pawn stars never open with your low dollar. That being said the cat's out of the bag, the deals on the table, and the past is just that. I would counter with your bottom, state that is a fair offer with your experience, let the chips fall where they may, and be prepared to walk if they can't meet it.

Pretty much all you can do at this point that doesn't make you look like a vindictive prick that they'll take your refusal as a God send.

Just my .02 worth.

Pretty much already did that. Told them I wasn't comfortable with the offer and at this point I have to stick with the minimum I submitted but if they wanted to possibly negotiate something I am willing to do such and if not then thanks for the time and the interviews.

Thats normal though. Every site where their are reviews are filled with negative reviews. People are more motivated to take the time to write a bad review than a good one.
