Original KC Masterpiece!

KC Masterpiece BBQ sauce was the first sauce to win the American Royal BBQ contest. Dr. Rich Davis sold his sauce to the Clorox Corp, the same people who make Kingsford Charcoal. They cheapened up the original recipe, and now it taste NOTHING like the original stuff. Shame really.

I found this in my local grocery tonight. It's kind of like retro Pepsi. This is a special 35 Year Anniversary bottle with the ORIGINAL recipe. They should make it like this all the time anyway. I don't mind paying $3 or $4 for a bottle of good stuff. The Clorox version is usually like $2 a bottle, because it's been dumbed down with lesser ingredients.

The original stuff was pretty good, I'm looking forward to trying this to see if it tastes like I remember in the old days.

Lots of people like the current stuff, because they don't know any better. Taste a current Pepsi, then taste one of the retro Pepsi's made with real sugar. Same kind of thing. Big difference.
I have never tried the original KC, but I agree on Pepsi, why I am glad the throwbacks came back..

I have always wondered about this.

I had read about it winning awards, and the fact that is a KC MASTERPIECE I trick myself into buying it every 4 years or so, and am always like "WTF...Seriously??"

This explains it all.

I would sell out too if someone offered me big dough for my sauce.

Big Lots has been carrying Stubb's BBQ sauce from Austin, TX. Big bottle for $3, and that's a good deal. I also have some Rendevous and some Corky's Memphis sauce, some Bryant's original and some of Mr. Doggity's sauce in my cupboard, so I'm in pretty good shape on BBQ sauce right now.
What do you think of the Rosedale sauce? I myself love the stuff and am fan altogether in there BBQ.

As for Smoking Guns when they first opened in NKC I went there with some the crew. We had read all the awards the guy had won. We walked in the joint wasn't a soul in the place at lunch time. Looking around was 1st place ribbon and awards hanging all over the place. Then we got our food no smokey taste to the brisket. We all agreed the guy didn't take as much care in his joint as he did competition. We swore never to set foot there again and haven't. I have been hearing people giving it good reviews maybe it is time to give a second chance.

People have a love or hate relationship with Rosedale. Personally, I love the joint. It's one of the oldest continuing BBQ joints in KC. It's got a front counter you can sit at, the food comes out fast. And if you don't mind a styrofoam plate, it's a great value. For a dinner you get whatever meat you want (I love their turkey) and three sides -crinkle cut fries, beans and slaw, all for less than $10. The beer and the soda is in bottles or cans, and they have one of the widest selections in town. They have diet Vernor's ginger ale...which is way cool if you drink diet soda like I do. Downside on Rosedale is their ribs are usually fatty, kind of the consistency of pot roast, and I don't like them that much. The brisket is cut into cubes, not strips, and it's hard to manage on a bun. The sauce is wonderful. Has an apple fruit kick, and is just terrific. They make a regular and a hot version.

I had Smokin' Guns at a catered event once, never been to the restaurant in NKC, so I can't really say much about them. I've had friends that have gone there and had a good experience.

Heh...I was having lunch with a customer at Quick's once in the early 1990s. His car was stolen from the parking lot while we were having lunch. Awkward!

Ive been a fan since the first time I went there in the seventies. We would finish work at Worlds of Fun drive to Kansas get a slab and a cold 40 of Olympia 3:2 for us 18 year old. I love the fries at Rosedale and the sauce is perfect for dipping fries in. After finish meal we headed to Crazy Bobs and Fat Hattie's private club on corner 18th and SW BLVD. It was just a private drinking club that we knew the owners ad let us in. When Hattie sold out it became Apartment Lounge strip club. Fun times and I still try to make it to Rosedale at least 1 time a week.

Back to KC Masterpiece I think that Sweet Baby Rays original is closer to the old Masterpiece from what I remember.

I'm buying a case to try it. I'm willing to ship a few to guys(free of charge)who can't find it in their area but wanna try it. Six in a case, and I'll probably use two at the most. PM me if you're looking for it but having trouble finding it.
