So I guess it's just if you throw the 'original round' tender on them that you can't get any compensation. If you put a 2nd round tender, it doesn't appear to matter if they were a UDFA.

Good news w/r/t to any potential Mitchell defection in '18 if he plays well again in '17.

It's a little more than I'd want to pay Sorenson given the depth of the S class in this year's draft, but Sorenson really was a johnny on the spot player for us and some guys just have a nose for the football. I suspect he'll be in the middle of several big plays for us again this year.

I'd rather see some shit team overpay for him and give up a 2nd to do so, but that ain't happening. He's coming back.

If Mitchell plays like he did last year......then I fully expect to see him receive a 1st round tender.

Depends on the league-wide state of the cap and the strength of the draft.

The Chiefs could game it a bit; determine that they're better served with the 2nd round pick and put that on him. A 1st round tender would A) be pretty damn expensive and B) definitely not be beaten. A 2nd round would be cheaper and, worst case scenario, yield a 2nd round pick.

So if the draft is deep and the league doesn't have a ton of spare cap sitting around, the Chiefs may just decide to put the 2nd round on him and see if anyone bites. A 2nd round pick is a pretty damn impressive return.

If they're willing to put a 1st round tender on him, they'd be willing to give him a long-term deal. I think that's what you'd see instead. If they still aren't sold on him, then the 2nd would be most likely.

But we're getting waaaaay ahead of ourselves there.
