Calling CDCox / anyone smart with math.. please

I'm taking a kamikaze run at a statistics test that will allow me to bypass the GRE at 10 a.m. tomorrow.

I can figure out how to get standard deviation of one set of data (example: number of pages in a set of books) but don't know how to determine "mean for the set of data" for something like:

Students at CP University and their majors

xxxxxxxx | Male ------ Female ----- Total

BIOLOGY 10 ------- 20 --------- 30
BUSINESS 25 ------- 30 ---------- 55
PHYSICS 5 -------- 3 --------- 8
THEATER 5 -------- 7 ---------- 12
UNDECIDED 20 -------- 15 --------- 35

TOTAL 65 ------ 75 -------- 140

..... so.. the **** do I do...?

In a STATS class you can solve for this and find the arithmetic mean.

No, and as far as I know, I'm on the honor system to not use any sort of help, notes and guessing calculator.

EDIT: Just received the test from the program.

Well, technically, he's only asked for help. It doesn't appear that he's actually received any.

You have a STATS test without a TI84? That's the dumbest thing I have ever heard, numerous calculations cannot be done without the formulas in the TI84. Good luck I guess.

It was multiple choice concerning two graphs. Basically it asked what are measures central tendency and what are relational measures. The only calculating I needed to do was a mean for a set of numbers smaller than 15 and eyeball the amount of people in a bar graph.

I feel like if I screwed this up then so be it.. considering it was the study guide I received a few days ago.

Hey, just FYI. Just because the course is called STATS doesn't mean you have to capitalize every letter every single time you use it. Stats/stats is a perfectly acceptable way of writing it.

Okay, I have not taken a STATS class nor do I have a TI84, and I am by no means (heh) a math guy.

But, if you assume there are 10 categories (eg. female bio, male bio, female business, etc.) and divide the total number of students by the number of groups (ie 140/10), you will get 14. This would be the average number of students in each program.

Then you can do a SD to see the variation within the data set and whatever the **** else you math people do.

Edit: I segregated the sexes for no apparent reason. Probably should divide by 5 if you want avg students/program. This is why you need a goddamn question first.

FWIW the question concerned education levels... some HS, HS grad, some college, college grad or post-graduate. The question was multiple choice asking for "which of the following are true based on the graph" with answers like "more than X amount of people are in the data set" "more women than men went to high school" et cetera.

Got it Tuesday and it seemed simple (at the time) until I started worrying about it last night.

Turns out it wasn't even worth worrying at all, and now I'm kind of skeptical for the program in general now because the director either thinks I'm a moron and gave me a bullshit test just to get me and my money into their program or the guy is incompetent and gave me the test thinking it was a study guide.
