Nice.

I'm glad that Florida didn't get hammered as bad as was being predicted. I know there is still a ton of cleanup and repairs to do, but I'm happy all of you didn't get nuked off the face of the planet and Florida isn't a barren wasteland right now.

There's no doubt that Irma caused major damage and some loss of life. All of that is tragic and terrible. I can't imagine coming back to a destroyed house or learning that someone I love died.

But it seems pretty clear to me that it was MUCH better than anticipated, and that the media seems disappointed in that. Instead of blaming forecasters or explaining things we can't explain, can't we take a collective sigh of relief over the destruction that wasn't?

I hope that doesn't come off wrong.

Here I am. I survived Irmageddon in a shelter since Sat, that can withstand a Cat 5 on the highest ground in my area. Got home yesterday at noon and just got my power back about a half hour ago. It's a good thing yesterday was a cool day and not hot.

Neighborhood is a mess, fences gone, even large trees down. Almost every street strewn with branches. Some damage but not too bad. My giant oak was thinned out and pruned for me but a LOT more than I would have liked. Some some large branches. Doesn't look as nice.

Wind sounded like a freight train. Shelter was quite an experience. Turned out my corner where I camped was the Massachusetts corner, one a few streets over from where I grew up. She was 91 and looked 50. Amazing.

Glad you made it. Have fun chopping up branches the next few days.

Did your house survive structurally, more or less?

My pool was full of junk, my screens from my pool cage and lots of leaves. So the pool cage is damaged. I haven't noticed anything structurally beyond that. Mostly landscaping type damage and my beautiful giant oak. Neighbor's two trees are leaning on my fence but did not take it down. They were very tall but had slim trunks.

Guy next door's generator can be heard over here. I asked if I could make a cup of coffee.

Good thing I was low on frozen meat. I had planned to do a shopping but not when the storm was predicted. I held off. Just gonna BBQ the package of chicken and salmon from Costo tonight to get the rest cooked up.

I am so sick of cold food—mostly peanut butter.

My brother told me before the storm hit that the surge was being exaggerated being on the side we were of the storm. I was most worried about that.
Some areas are still predicted to flood though from rising rivers and creeks.

Good article I read in the paper at the shelter was on how the manatees, sea turtles etc. take care of themselves. Just amazing!

This is why it wound up not so bad afterall:

The credit goes to the Bermuda High, which acts like a sort of traffic cop for the tropical North Atlantic Ocean. The circular system hovering over Bermuda jostled Irma onto northern Cuba Saturday, where being over land sapped it of some power, and then around the tip of the Florida peninsula, cutting down on storm surge damage on both coasts of the state.

“The Bermuda High is finite and it has an edge, which was right over Key West,” Masters said. Irma caught the edge and turned north.

If Irma had passed 20 miles west of Marco Island instead of striking it on Sunday, “the damage would have been astronomical.” A track like that would have placed the powerful, eastern eye wall of Irma on Florida’s Gulf Coast.

https://www.bloomberg.com/news/artic...amage-so-wrong

Pretty interesting.

After spending most of two days cleaning up our yard and still no power. We decided to seek out some air conditioning and electricity.

If we saw the bad part of Florida, we should enjoy the good part of Florida now. Staying on the beach with a Tiki bar, pool, jacuzzi and the beach right out our front door.

Went home and cleaned up the yard and put away inside protections today. Thankfully no damage to our home or property. Still without power and work closed again tomorrow. Staying with the in-laws who have power.
