The SI (metric) units are sooooo much easier to deal with and actually make sense. My son is in college for engineering now and he was home last weekend and was bitching about the same thing.

Exactly right. Just mandate the switch. Anybody that needs to know how to convert can get it figured out. Teaching 12 year olds how to convert is pointless. They can just be on the metric system exclusively as adults and ignore the old system. Two generations later we're on the same system as the ENTIRE REST OF THE FRICKING WORLD and it's done.
