Would you give Jones 3/100m or trade him?

We might as well start the conversation.

Aaron Donald got a 3 year extension worth 95m and Jones won’t/shouldn’t accept a penny less.

We can probably get the equivalent of 2 firsts if we trade him.

Poll will be up in a minute…

We should trade Jones. With all that cap space we could even sign a Chris Jones!

It's a win win!

Yeah, I voted to extend him. Dude's a beast.

This was exactly my argument last offseason when people brought up the idea of trading Hill. Bird in hand, I said. BUT:

Nobody replaces Jones one for one. But if you consider that you can improve production overall for less cap dollars plus adding top draft capital, you really have to consider it.

If you can replace, say Jones and Clark's production which costs $50m this year and improve it across THREE positions, plus add a LT that's cost controlled for 5 years, then you really have to consider it.

I'm not saying this is a MUST DO, just that it's a lot more complicated than it seems at first glance IF you remove the emotional attachment to the player.

Positional importance

Wr is easier to replace. There’s a reason teams are drafting them at such a clip and letting vets walk or trading away hill and Adams

Pass rusher is the opposite

I couldn't fathom the haul the Chiefs would get for Jones after this season but it would be franchise-altering.

However, equally franchise-altering could be the void left behind, if not moreso. To that point, I'd rather keep him and bolster the dline around him with top FA's and/or stud rookies.

If there was a Mahomes on the Dline who'd significantly mitigate the loss of Jones as in the Tyreek trade, I'd lean more toward trading him. But as it stands, Jones IS the Mahomes of the defensive line, if not that entire side of the ball.

.
Let's be brutally clear here-

We have 33 players under contract, including no LT, no RT, and MVS as your returning #1 WR. We'll have around $50m in cap room.

There is no bolstering the d-line around him with top FA's. Not possible. Stud rookies? Well, we'll be picking around #30 again.

These are the facts.

I'm not advocating for anything other than it's a really tough decision. I'm not saying we have to go one way or the other, just saying that if we're going to discuss the situation, we should do so in full light of the factual situation.

We have no LT. No starting quality RT. Our DE position is: Karlaftis, Danna, Herring, Kaindoh. Our WR room is: MVS, Toney, Moore.

9 draft picks and that'll eat up like what, $12m or so of the cap room? Let's be generous and say $10m.

So $40m and we'll need LT, RT, DE, WR all capable of producing on a championship caliber level for a SB caliber team.

I don't think we can afford to pay Jones AND Brown. Given a choice, I'd pay Jones and send a #2 to GB for Nijman and a mid-level LT contract, but I don't know if it's on the table.

But I am fairly certain we can't pay them both and field an NFL caliber 53.
I'm all for paying Jones if it means we don't pay OBJ.

If you extend Jones and draft a good DE to replace Clark…this defense can get consistent pressure without needing to blitz for the forseable future and when you have the kind of plus back 7 that we do, that would be huge. It would allow Spags to “smile and dial” for the next 4 years on defense. Massive advantage against guys like Burrow.

Lots of big decisions looming.

Obj
Jones
Sneed
Thornhill
Juju
Hardman

If we’re boiling it down to cap space, give me Jones over any 2 of those guys. Maybe 3.

We’ve all seen what Brett can do with draft picks, so if we’re trying to see realistically what the kind of quilality of talent offset would be, we’re saying something like (talking value of players, not specific players)

Chris Jones

Or

OBJ
Sneed
McDuffie
Karlaftis

Entering his age 29 season, that’s probably the right call.

Jones made his $$ last deal, so slightly less likely than Reek to hold out.

This is the Tyreek decision 2.0.

I guess it depends on what the FO thinks about the draft class at LT and DL.
