Report: NFL investigating whether Patriots deflated footballs in AFC title game

Source tells Bob Kravitz that Patriots may have deflated footballs against Colts

By WTHR Channel 13

FOXBORO, Mass. -

A source within the NFL tells wthr.com's Bob Kravitz that the league is investigating the possibility that the Patriots deflated footballs in their 45-7 win over the Colts Sunday night.

The source told Kravitz that officials took a ball out of play at one point and weighed it.

A deflated football could be easier to throw and catch in poor weather conditions than a properly inflated ball.

Kravitz was told that if a league investigation confirms deflated footballs, it would result in lost draft picks for the Patriots.

More to come on this story.

How's Kraft's butt-buddy Goodell planning on "Protecting the Shield" for this one? I'm thinking he'll do what the NCAA is doing with UNC: ignore it and hope it goes away.

I can't believe the NFL decided to just destroy the tapes from Spygate. What kind of crooked ass shit is that?

If true, you have to vacate that win. Anything less is a travesty.

New England would have won that game by 30 if they'd been using beach balls.

Supposedly the punishment is losing a draft pick, just like it was with Spygate. Well, that clearly wasn't enough to stop the Patsies from cheating again. A real commissioner would be putting the Colts on a flight to Glendale to play Seattle and banning Belicheat from the league for life.

In boxing, the punishment for tampering with your gloves is a forfeit. It should be no different in football with the game ball.

Then they should have played it straight up then. Again, if true.

If NE deflated balls, why couldn't Luck and company catch anything?

Tampering with the ball in baseball gets you immediately ejected and suspended. 8.02.

I'm not exactly sure if this is true for the NFL, but in college, each offense uses its own game ball. So the Pats would deflate only their own game balls making it easier for them to grip in the rainy weather while denying the Colts that advantage. Lane Kiffin tried this same stunt against Oregon when he was at USC, by the way.

Because they didn't practice with deflated balls all week, and NE did?

That's my guess.
