Computer Won't Boot - CPU Fans Not Running

I built a computer from parts of a build from 2012 for my daughter. The system had been running fine for the past 2 1/2 months but today, it wouldn't boot. I opened up the case and while power supply is running, the motherboard LED's lit (Asus Z68), neither CPU fan is running.

I disconnected and reconnected the power cable from the Cooler/fan to the motherboard but it still isn't running.

Is this a power supply or CPU fan issue? FTR, I can't even get a BIOS screen. It's just blank.

Thanks in advance!

I moved the fan power cable to different slots on the motherboard but it's not powering up. I can feel the drives running and the DVD opens, closes and spins. USB devices are lit and being powered.

Plug the CPU fan into a different header.

If the CPU fan header is dead or the fan itself is dead then the computer wont boot. Most BIOS's are setup to not boot if they dont sense CPU fan speed.

I've tried three different headers on the motherboard. Neither fan booted, so I called Amazon. The "Window" to exchange ended January 31st but they're giving me a full refund.

Now, I just have to figure out a new fan, as the Cooler Master N520 is no longer available.

Thanks for the assistance!

Ack! I found another cpu fan slot on the motherboard and the fan powered up. Unfortunately, all I get is a black screen.

The computer was working fine yesterday but when she shut it down last night, it had to do MS updates. I doubt that has anything to do with it.

Back to troubleshooting.

To hell with CPU fans. Get this: http://www.corsair.com/en-us/hydro-s...uid-cpu-cooler

Really simple, easy to install and self contained liquid cooling. It takes about 10min to install and you don't have to dick around with liquids, clamps or hoses etc since it's all self contained.

Yeah, they're awesome. I have one now in my main studio computer.

This is bizarre. I just tested with my wife's monitor, just to make sure it wasn't a faulty cable, and it's still not booting. Everything is powered but no signal. I'm going to try a DVI-DVI cable, thinking that maybe the HDMI port fried.

But if that fan wasn't working for a long period of time, maybe the CPU burned out, but I would think that I would have seen a CPU fan message upon booting at some point in time, right?

As an update, I removed the motherboard from the case, removed the fan and re-seated the CPU. The motherboard continues to power up and appears to be working but will not even get to the BIOS screen.

One thing of note: Some of the USB devices that were lit previously are no longer lit. I think I'm looking at motherboard failure, which of course comes after I posted the other night that I've never had issues with ASUS boards.

I just ordered a new 1155 Gigabyte motherboard. Hopefully, that's the issue and not the CPU.

Monitor is illuminated though correct? I mean - you can tell it's not the Monitor...?

The CPU Fan will run intermittently. also - it hasn't thrown a Fan error, earlier on? Fish may be your box, he's really knowledgeable, I've noticed. I may have a fan that would work, if you want to call me tomorrow we can do some quick research - or I can at least get it for you for much cheaper than you can buy it, most likely.

Thanks, Bud! I didn't want to bug you with my silly issue. I Amazon'd it and if it turns out to be the CPU (which I hope not!), I can easily return the board to Amazon and I'll hit you up for an Intel i7 of some type.

Thanks, Mang!

Today I took the time to replace the Asus motherboard with a new Gigabyte B75m and fortunately, the CPU is fine. It's strange how the Asus just took a dump after 3 years but the fans and system are working fine now.
