That has been a varying cultural construct. A few centuries ago a tan was unattractive because it was a sign that you had to work outside and thus, were poor.

never used a tanning bed. never really went w/o a shirt too much. shit's nasty.

Vitamin D. Most people don't get enough sun exposure to generate enough vitamin D. Especially in the winter. Therefore tanning bed.
