The 49ers have expressed to others that a deal for QB Alex Smith is effectively complete. Can't be finalized til league year begins 3/12

Jason La Canfora ‏@JasonLaCanfora

so it's not official, both clubs view it at as it's effectively done. I do not know the other team. KC and JAX are 2 teams that make sense

Make no mistake, that's what they'll have to do if they don't work out a trade.
Great post.

And that's besides the point. I'm sick and ****ing tired of people pointing to a team that drafted ALDON FREAKING SMITH at #11 overall and compare it to us drafting a shitass like Joeckel at #1 overall. THEN they have the nerve to compare Colin Kaepernick under the tutelage of Jim Harbaugh vs Mike Glennon, Tyler Bray, Ryan Nassib, or EJ Manuel.

They're not even close. One team was a team with a history of acquiring franchise QBs and could afford to take the BPA route, and the other team hasn't drafted a guy since 1983. One team had only Jake Locker available to them, the other team has their pick of ANY of 2013's QBs.

The differences go on and on. So no, that's not an acceptable strategy. It's a weak strategy. It's not considered myopic to demand a team to look at one position and one position only at 1.1 when it's so CLEARLY obvious that's what they should do.
Sorry..Niner fan here...just to clear something up...

Aldon was actually taken at #7 overall and the Niners had their choice of EVERY QB in the class (outside of Newton) including Gabbert and Ponder....and passed.

As for the "do you see Kaepernick" thing....well if everyone thought he was gonna be that good he wouldn't have been picked in the second round and BEHIND Gabbert, Ponder, Locker and Dalton.

Taking a QB tho at the top of the draft when there isn't one really worth the pick is how the 49ers drafted Alex Smith to begin with. It only took 5 or 6 years for him to turn it around...lol.

Personally I think you guys need to realize that you have a coach who can make a QB better in Reid. That's HUGE. It doesn't need to e with the first pick. Taking a LT isn't a bad idea...you build teams from the insode out, not the other way around.

I'm sick of this Kaepernick bullshit. It's revisionist history. He wasn't some kind of OMFG amazing prospect in that draft. He was an incredibly raw athlete with great measurables. Give the 49ers credit for drafting him because they deserve some of it, but they could not have expected him to play as well as soon as he did.

Harbaugh appears to be a hell of a QB coach, but he's also not a flawless talent evaluator. Andrew ****ing Luck was not his first choice at Stanford. He settled for Luck after he lost out on Gabbert.

People overlook how important luck is to this process as well.

This article is 4 days old mind you, but it says they will keep him if they can't find a trade partner.

I don't really believe anything that anyone is saying in this whole situation, when it happens, then I'll believe something, I just posted this for information's sake.

Also for information's sake, if they did release him, does he become a UFA? Or does he have to go through the waiver process, and secondly, would we be first in line to put in a claim?

Aaron Rodgers?

An endless carousel of O-Coordinators is why it took him so long to develop into something, not lack of talent.

FWIW, I was a big fan of Kaepernick coming out. I don't see a "Kaepernick" or even a "Wilson" in this draft.

Dude, you seem like a good poster. I hope you stick around.

But you really don't know what you are talkng about in regards to the Chiefs. This is a move the Chiefs have made for teh last 30 years. Its not just this year, this move. It's been something that we've always done and frankly, most fans here are tired of the excuses.

We've had GM's in the past flat out come out and say they won't draft a QB early, because they are too afraid of them busting. So again, sorry, but we've been down this build from the inside out path. I'm not really excited or looking forward to do that again.

True Fans are constantly appealing to Kapernick and Dalton lately about how awesome it is to draft QBs in the 2nd round. I have to constantly remind them that only 8 QBs in the entire history of the NFL have been taken in the 2nd and amounted to shit. And that's counting Jake Plummer.

Which QB did he make better? Vick, after prison?

The fact is, without a top 5 pick at QB (McNabb and Vick), Reids QBs have less TDs than INTs and a sub-70 QBR.

Reid is a good coach and a great offensive mind. Even he can't make chicken salad out of chicken shit.

Aaron Rodgers should have been the pick...no question.

The rotating OC issue is true, but he was never worthy of a 1st overall pick. That year was even worse than this year as most people said there was no PLAYER worthy of the first overall pick.

BS.

Alex Smith sucked because.....he sucked.

Blaming the coaches is what everyone wants to do when a player sucks, rather than passing the responsibility off to the player.

Alex Smith sucks. Lets get him a new coach. New coach comes in, Alex Smith still sucks....new coach gets fired. Next coach comes in, Alex Smith still sucks, next coach gets fired. New coach comes in, immediately drafts his replacement, gets the most he can squeeze out of Alex (which is a good game manager) and then replaces him half a season later......

Sometimes (most of the time imo).....it's the players, not the coaches

This is a smart post and makes all the sense in the world.

The problem is the Chiefs haven't drafted a QB in the 1st round in almost 30 years. Since this franchise has been pretty miserable for the last 30 years, we want something different (a QB in the 1st round). They were dominant in the '90's but it didn't really lead to anything of great magnitude other than a bunch of playoff appearances.

So to many, the expectation is that the Chiefs MUST draft a QB at #1. They have the pick of the litter, so it's the organizations responsibility to find the best and pick him.

If this is the once in a blue moon year that no franchise QB is in this draft, then most say they don't care (I'm sure they'll bitch about it 5 years from now though). It's better than signing for or trading for a retread QB.

He made McNabb into a QB that played in multople NFCCGs, He made people think Kolb was a servicable QB and has people trying to trade for Nick FOles right now. He was also on the GB staff when Favre was traded to the team.
