Make sure your cold air returns are clean and nothing is blocking them. If the system is really old it's possible that the evaporator coil is dirty as well. That's not something that I'd recommend the average person trying to do though.

most limits either automatically reset at around a 20-30 degree temp fall, or they are a manual reset. If yours is bad it could just be a bad switch. Or a thorough cleaning could help, air flow could very well be an issue. If it is gas and it's a flame roll out switch venting could be a problem. Make/fuel source/orientation (up flow or counter flow) would be good info to share.

Alright man lets get specific. Which limit switch is it? There should be 3 to 5 depending on age of the unit.
Determining which limit switch that has went bad will help to determine if there is anything else wrong. Parts do go bad and a limit switch/snap switch take a lot of temperature change but they do generally last a good amount of time. Depending on which switch is what you should check to make sure there is no further issues. Check your filters and the cups in your squirrel cage of the blower assembly to insure you are moving the proper amount of air across the heat exchanger. Look for signs of the flame rolling out. Make sure your flew is not blocked or that the cap has not came off. Of course there are many other things. But that is a start. Going to my late afternoon class. Will check back later this evening.

Alright,
I crawled under the house and screwed with it a bit more, then I called in the HVAC guy. I don't have the time to mess with it right now, so I'll let a professional deal with it. Thanks for all the suggestions!

Majority of the time this is caused by a clogged filter. I see It all the time. Generally people won't notice there heater turning off and on until its to mate(part goes bad) If your heater is 10-15+ years old its prob one of those hi tech units that are no fun to work on and require an experienced tech.

When dealing with a gas furnace it is usually the best idea to let a licensed professional do the work that is necessary.

Yeah that sure is nice in a crawl space or an attic full of insulation. Unless you want to make several trips in and out of one of those types of places.

I probably would have barreled in and tried to do it myself, but I recently got burned trying to fix my dryer, going through two different parts orders, wait times on those, and then still eventually calling in a service tech to fix what I actually knew was the NEXT problem but was just too frustrated (okay, the wife was actually frustrated going to laundromat) to deal with myself.

Is it one of the sideways mounted to the floor joists sonsabitches? Gotta love laying on your side, usually in dirt while fighting them. I had to pull the burners from the last one I worked on, on a normal furnace that only takes a couple minutes, but it took me all of 20 minutes and cut up wrists and cuss words to get them out. And then repeat the process to get them back in.
