Jameis Winston suspended for student union tirade

Jameis Winston suspended for half vs. Clemson over obscenity incident

By Jerry Hinnen | College Football Writer
September 17, 2014 11:40 am ET

Florida State announced Wednesday that starting quarterback Jameis Winston has been suspended for the first half of the No. 1 Seminoles' game vs. Clemson on Saturday for yelling an "offensive and vulgar" phrase in the student union on FSU's campus.
Deadspin collected a number of tweets from Florida State students who said they saw Winston standing on a table Tuesday "screaming" the phrase (one made popular by a series of recent viral hoax videos), which uses graphic sexual language. (Both links use the phrase and other R-rated language.)

"As the university's most visible ambassadors, student-athletes at Florida State are expected to uphold at all times high standards of integrity and behavior that reflect well upon themselves, their families, coaches, teammates, the Department of Athletics and Florida State University. Student-athletes are expected to act in a way that reflects dignity and respect for others," Florida State interim president Dr. Garnett Stokes and athletic director Stan Wilcox said in a joint statement.

"As a result of his comments yesterday, which were offensive and vulgar, Jameis Winston will undergo internal discipline and will be withheld from competition for the first half of the Clemson game.

"The University and athletics department will have no further comment on the matter."

On a teleconference Wednesday, Jimbo Fisher said his Heisman-winning quarterback's actions were "not a good decision," per Noles247.

"We have to keep learning, keep educating, and continue to make better decisions," Fisher added. "It is something that has to be addressed ... You can't make certain statements that are derogatory, inflammatory."

Fisher indicated he had spoken with Winston about the incident, saying "everything has been addressed and we are getting ready for the game."

Winston's off-the-field actions have been the target of increased scrutiny since the emergence of a December 2012 rape allegation against the redshirt sophomore late last year, one that has led to a current code of conduct investigation by the school. In April, Winston received a legal citation for shoplifting crab legs from a Tallahassee grocry store.

Kudos for choosing engineering, sure. Does he really do the work required to pass classes? Who knows. He speaks very unintelligibly and he's made several extremely poor decisions so I have my doubts. It's difficult for any D1 athlete to major in engineering. It's beyond extremely difficult for the QB1 for the #1 ranked team to major in engineering.

Ah, the rivalry rears its green head.

Just because FSU has a circus, which is a very cool extracurricular activity, doesn't make it a clown college. FSU is still listed, along with UF and USF as one of the top universities in the US. UF is probably better for engineering and some other majors, but FSU is better for creative majors. It in the top ten film schools and in the top five for creative writing. You don't get those at UF. Depends on what your major is going to be to make such claims.

It's a public university funded by taxpayers of the state of Florida, so that's government. Therefore, anyone reprimanding and disciplining Jameis who works at the school is government.

If we're comparing the two schools (you brought it up, not me) Florida State is ranked 95th in national university rankings while Florida is 48th. In Jameis's major (engineering) FSU is 102nd while Florida is 42nd.

So yes, compared to most Florida State academic programs, the University of Florida equates to brain surgery.
That is bullshit. FSU is considered a budget ivy in those books on colleges.
Now, I am not saying I agree with that after all of Scot's cuts. But its ranking is higher than what you posted, as is UF's. I guess it depends on who's ranking you're using. FSU is within the top 100 rankings for public universities. It ranks #43 up from a few years ago. Tied with NC. UF rose to #14 which is higher than its previous ranking. It is also listed as "very difficult" to get in per College data.

In fact UF admissions told my daughter she'd have no trouble getting in but FSU gave her a tougher time. Again, though, it depends on what one's major is going to be. I would never choose UF for a creative profession.

The rankings I provided were for national universities, not just public universities. Source was US News. So I call BS on your declaration of BS.

There's no probably about it - UF is a superior engineering program compared to FSU. FSU is ranked higher in certain areas (I think their Law schools is higher ranked, for one, albeit by only a few spots).

Regarding creative majors, Florida has one of the best Journalism schools in the country (top-10) and their Fine Arts program is higher ranked than FSU's.

One thing I won't dispute at all is that FSU has a much higher ranked clown college than UF's (which is non existent).

Yeah, well they had U of NC on it where the same university was tied with FSU in the public university rankings. There are several different rankings out there, it all depends on what each one uses to judge. You'll find FSU in the tops for what I said it's tops for, so it still comes down to one's major as to where it stands.
UF is not tops on creative majors.

The national rankings for all universities includes the Ivy League. IIRC, a few years back FSU and USF were on it around #64/65. Then again, this is from recall it may have been another ranking. But it's not a shit school across the board which you're implying.
