Bad news

SimplyRed started a thread about me not long ago. I thought I'd start one with the latest. I got very bad news today. My colon cancer got into my liver and the doc said it is stage 4. She said it can't be cured. Without treatment, I might last 10 weeks. Even with chemo, the best I could hope for is maybe 3 years. I'm scheduled to have a port put in tomorrow, Tuesday, at 1 pm. They start me on 3 types of chemo on Thursday.

How about those Royals tonight? Awesome game!

I start round 6 tomorrow and all is going well, except for some reason I do not know, the part of my neck where the tube goes from my port to the artery is sore as hell. I did a lot of work yesterday and didn't get worn out, washed a load of laundry and hung it up, transplanted a cedar tree, mowed a few acres, took the chainsaw to a dead large branch on a redbud tree, and sawed up some pine and hedge wood for firewood. Today, I finished mowing the front pasture and beside the barn except for where a dead skunk carcass is lying... ugh. After that, I hauled one wheelbarrow load of wood I had stacked up to the barn, and after that around dinner time, I noticed the pain in my neck where that tube is. I'll be telling the nurse about it first thing tomorrow and hope I don't have to go to the surgeon and have the tube set again. Since the port and tube are under the skin, if the tube is dislodged, I can't see how they could put it back without slicing on me.

Hey, Ed. Glad you are feeling well. Especially to do everything you just mentioned. That port issue sounds like a bitch, though.

My grandpa had a port for dialysis. He had to have it reset several times. Wasn't that big of a deal until he got really frail. You just really hope they don't have to move it.

It's not infected is it? Might grab your temperature.

Oh. And props on a productive day. I cut milo. All day. All weekend. I'd rather do household stuff.

I am off to a good start today. I didn't pass out! Plus, when I told the nurse about the soreness in my neck where the tube goes into the artery, she said it was no big deal, I just overdid something. Whew. Oh, lest I forget, I got the same nurse as last time when I was going down for the count. She saw me and said, "Oh, *this* guy..." They told me my nickname is Rapid Response Team Ed. Hrrmph. I've only passed out once and nearly passed out once, so I am 4 for 6 for not passing out now. That's a good average, right?

It is all better now. The nurse said I probably just strained a muscle in the area and pulled the incision where the tube is. It's not even sore to the touch at all now. Tomorrow, I get the pump unhooked, so I will have more mobility and can shower, too! One more morning of washing my hair in the sink is all I have to endure for the next 12 days.

I am in no shape now to fight anyone! On Wednesday, the nurse missed my port entirely when she jabbed the needle in and on Saturday and Sunday, the port area was sore as could be, like a big bruise. Last night, thick pus began pouring out of the incision scar and as I got more out, it began to feel less sore around there. I am trying to reach someone now, left a voicemail, to see if I need antibiotics or need to go to the ER. My temp is 100.3, so it's not too bad, but dammit all anyhow.

Yep. Head to the ER if you can't get ahold of your oncologist ASAP. Better to be safe than sorry.

It feels much better than it did and my temp isn't out of control, but it is frustrating trying to contact these people when the number on the business card refers me to another number which refers me to ANOTHER number where I left a voicemail. Arrrgh!

To clarify, it is not the tube in my neck that hurt like it was earlier. The nurse flat out missed my port. There are three "dots" under the skin and you aim for the center. She missed to the side and hurt me. I am also annoyed since the nurse told me to give her a call if the tube in my neck hurt worse or whatever. I'd LOVE to call you, I really would!

I am home now and got a broad spectrum antibiotic. I have to closely monitor myself for a few days as they are worried about the infection getting into my heart.
