"We believe it is critical to evolve how our programs meet the needs of families interested in positive and lifelong experiences for their children," said Michael Surbaugh, chief executive of the Boy Scouts.

The scouting board of directors voted unanimously to make the historic change in an organization that has been primarily for boys since its founding more than 100 years ago.

The Puritan idealism remains rampant. In Germany, they have Scouts - it's coed with very little issues. But then they aren't as hung up about sex as Americans seem to be.

I guess one scouting experience pretty much depends on the local council. My daughter was in a very active troop in Raytown. She became a repel master at 13. Heck, the local Boy Scout council wouldn't allow repelling as it was too dangerous.

Girl Scout camp offered a 50-mile back pack trek and a 50-mile canoe trip, both through Mark Twain National Forest. Boy Scouts - nope too dangerous.

And yes, our Troop was the first one that had German female Scouts down at Bartle for a complete session. The council powers-that-be has a fit when they found out that there actual girls spending the night.

I quit boy scouts because all my troop ever did was lame games with paper cut outs and baking.

Apparently they were strict about not letting girls participate, but MOST of our troop leaders were moms.

As an Eagle Scout myself, I think this is ****ing great. I know and have known plenty of girls that would have loved to experience some of what I got to going through scouting. For the most part, Girl Scouts is little more than a cookie racket. Boy Scouts was life shaping for me. When I heard this news it about made my day.

Plus we, as a nation. are one a very short list of countries that still have scouts segregated by gender. Coed Scouts isn't new, or liberal, or anything. Just something else numerous other countries do.
