In the market for a new TV
Have a 7-8 year old Panasonic 50" plasma. Looking to go bigger (probably 55"), higher refresh is better (use it primarily for games and sports). How's this deal look (with BB's 10% movers coupon)?

If you don't want "smart" tv features and are going to put it in a darkish space then look at the Samsung plasmas. They're getting out of that biz because the margins aren't high enough but the displays still look completely ace. I think I saw on the Wirecutter that the 51" plasma is down to $550.

I have nothing to add. Only that this is so on point, I feel it needs to be said twice.

Can you wait a month? Black Friday is right around the corner. Keep an eye out for stuff on slickdeals and fatwallet.

Get a plasma while you can. Everyone is getting out of that business and you won't be able to find them soon. Right now, you can find excellent deals on them. I got a 51" Samsung plasma two months ago for $379. Then I sold my 10 year old 50" Samsung for $150 LOL.
Honestly, everyone says that a plasma TV needs to be in a dark room, but mine isn't, and the viewing is excellent. If you are going to get LCD, then get as high of a refresh rate as possible. The one you referenced seems good. |

There is a bigger difference between the 55 and 60 than I expected.

Holy ****, you plasma proponents aren't kidding. Set up the 55" LCD Panny yesterday and it's s huge downgrade. 60" Samsung plasma it is.
Although I wish I'd pulled the trigger a year earlier when Panny existed the market. |

I got a 65" Panasonic plasma about a year ago. They aren't available any more?
One other thing on new TV's: The trend toward making the frame as small as possible and mounting the speakers on the back with the sound to be bounced off the wall and into the room is bullshit. Both my new TVs have terrible sound. I had to buy a sound bar for each. I had the 2008 65" panasonic plasma in my old house with the wider frame and speakers mounted on the frame in front. I didn't even need to use the receiver/surround sound most of the time. |
