The "Grammatical Errors that Annoy You" Thread

From time to time, both online and in the real world, I run across someone who makes some grammatical mistake that annoys the hell out of me. I'm a nice guy most times, so I don't typically call people out on such errors. However, I do feel the need to vent somewhere, and perhaps help some poor unfortunate soul. So here it is. A thread to gripe about others' grammatical errors without seeming like an ass.

One rule: if you post an error in this thread, be sure to explain WHY it is wrong rather than just point out the fact that it's wrong. It's a learning experience and all that.

Here's one that I actually don't like. At all.

According to American standards, punctuation should basically always go inside of quotation marks. British people do the opposite.

I actually personally think it makes a lot more sense to have the punctuation on the outside (and do so frequently), but technically, it's not correct in this country.

I'm not much of a grammar nazi. As long as I can understand the intent of the poster I won't complain. I'll throw one out just for fun:

Resign versus re-sign. Too many times I'll read a post stating a player was resigned rather than re-signed. Amazing what a little hyphen will do to the definition of a word.

The phrase "I could care less" doesn't make sense. At least not the way people use it. Technically, that phrase means something to the effect of "I can think of other topics that would be less interesting than the one you mentioned," which implies that it's actually a mildly interesting topic at worst.

The way people use it, the phrase should instead be "I couldn't care less," meaning that there is no other topic that would be any less interesting than the one at hand.

Like I said, this one's a tough one because both versions are pretty much accepted. However, it bugs the hell out of me because the former doesn't really make sense.

This one tops my ****ing list.
