Andy Reid is a terrible head football coach

Andy Reid got depantsed in the Super Bowl by Bruce Arians.

Bruce ****ing Arians and Tom ****ing Brady.

Well, you see, Andy Reid is an offensive genius, and how dare we question Andy Reid's genius in not running the ball and not utilizing the screen pass in the face of an epically brutal pass rush, a patchwork offensive line and a QB with a hurt toe?

How dare we question his geniusness?

The entire franchise was a 2-month-old, used tampon.

Wally brought in AS11 to stabilize the club. And it worked. Wally got more out of AS11 than any other coach in Alex's career. Won our first playoff game since the invention of beer. On the road.

Brought us back from hell.

Wasn't good enough, so he brought in better quality, more malleable clay that he could mold. Sent Alex to a retirement home that pays him 90m.

Organizes and oversees the off-season, then goes out and scores a record number of 10 TDs ... on the road ... with a first-year starter.

All in all, I think Wally has done a damn fine job.

We ended the San Diego game on 3 out of 4 three and outs after dominating on offense. If not for SD muffing a punt and missing a fg, we let them climb back into a game they had no business climbing back into. Against both San Diego and Pittsburgh, we had the same pattern we've seen a million times under Reid... Defense falls into ultra conservative prevent, offense stalls on multiple 3 and outs, opponent ties by halftime. Against Pittsburgh, we again relied primarily on hunt to hold the lead... It worked then, but it's not a crutch I want to keep relying on.

We've already lost two playoff games because our playcalling was horrendous when we took our foot off the gas. When reid has it in his head to protect the lead, we are consistently ineffective and much of that is because our playcalling feels totally different than the gameplan that got us the lead in the first place. R2p2, predictable runs up the gut, frustratingly conservative prevent defense. It's not just this year. Andy Reid has done this his whole career.

It's such a simple solution. Don't completely abandon the gameplan that earned you the lead. It's not like bellichick at all. Everybody makes mistakes. But when the same fixable mistake happens over and over and over again, that's absolutely on the coach.

It is possible to acknowledge Andy Reid's spectacular ability to coach players and spectacular playcalling while recognizing that he has consistent flaws in managing games Situationally. We aren't talking about a few clock management errors. We are talking about a consistent trend of him being inept at holding a lead and closing out games where we are winning. And the worst part of it is, he is inept at it because he goes against all the brilliant strategy that earned him the lead in the first place.

Except that's not entirely true.

In the Charger game, at the same point where Alex Smith would have checked to a screen and made them punt, Mahomes hit Sausage on a wheel route for a TD.

And then what did we do on the next drive with 10 minutes left? Run hunt straight up the gut twice in a row. Followed by multiple 3 and outs. Do you think we went 3 and out the entire 4q because mahomes couldn't move the ball? Or was it playcalling?

Same pattern every game. Sprint to a big lead. Completely inept on BOTH offense and defense until team comes back. Come out of halftime and both sides dominate. 4th quarter lead where offense lays up while the defense is asked to hold the lead.

Mr. chiefzilla1501, you're one of my favorite posters, but dude ...

Wally is not responsible for the "forward progress" debacle. Wally is not responsible for the holding call on Fisher. Before that, we were a seriously injured team in NE with key guys literally playing on 1 leg. Playoff games are tough, man. We're just not used to being in so many of them in such a short period of time.

Teams have to acclimate to the NFL playoff dynamic. Once they rise to that level of competitiveness, the good ones learn how to win in the tournament. Wally's been there. But, other than a couple of FA pickups, most of our players had never sniffed a playoff game in their entire careers. Throw in a few officiating decisions made by Satan's Turds, and we are where we are.

Easy there, man.

I'm not looking them all up but the 2nd to last possession was 1 run and 2 passes. The first pass was short and the 2nd was incomplete. They didn't execute.

It's just like the Bob Sutton argument here. The truly elite coaches make good units great but even great coaches can't make bad units good. Likewise, bad coaches can make great units good but they can't make great units bad.

Talent trumps everything else in the NFL, period.
Bingo, Mike Tomlin is successful because he went to a ready made team and has a front office that has still found him players.

If he had had the experience most new HC's have where he was hired by some team picking top 5 coming off a 3-13 year he'd probably be a position coach again who hadn't HCd in years and had some token Rooney interviews.

Also for a guy who was a DB coach he really knows shit about defense.

It's all hindsight, of course, including the fact that Reid and Smith won in KC when there was little of that happening prior to their tenures. If that was all they did, it was great. The fact that Reid moved on to a better player cements his greatness.

People are correct to "blame" Reid; he made KC respectable again.
