Most of you grew up on the west side - this thread should wilt away before lunch time arrives. That's fine though - I'll reminisce by myself -

I grew up in the 80s so I was too young to cruise.
What do I remember about Noland Rd.? I remember Children's Palace. I remember Venture always advertising Nintendo games for sale that they didn't have in stock. I remember being traumatized by swimming lessons at the YMCA. I remember this weird store called Service Merchandise where you always had to take a ticket to the front to get your stuff. Edit: I swear there was a YMCA near Noland and 35th, but I can't find it on a map.

I don't believe that I've ever been on Noland Road, let alone "cruised it."

Independence is my home town. I'm from Western Independence (Van Horn), we used to cruise 40 highway. Cool Crest, McDonalds (which is gone now) Texas Toms, Hi-Boys, etc. Noland Road was mostly kids from Truman and Chrisman HS. K-Mart is where Venture was at Noland and I-70. There was a Hi-Boy on Noland but was torn down when car dealerships expanded.

I'm from the KS side, but spent many hours at Cool Crest. Loved that place. Is it still there?
As for the Venture stores. They never had their sale items in stock on the KS side either. |

Cruised it. From the car wash at 39th and Noland to the Food 4 Less parking lot at 40 Highway. Back and forth, rinse, repeat. Mostly in the early 90s.

Question to you guys:
I lived in Independence until I was 12 or so (1992). When I go back, I am amazed at how crappy and run down the city is. Was it always like that or was I just too young to notice? Independence is kind of depressing now.
