Are there any unknown "rules" against acquiring a second remote job?

Background: I work from home, and I love my job. Due to this, I don't want to jeopardize my current job but would love to acquire a second "easy" remote job that I think I may be able to secure (in process). While it pays less than my current job, it would be a great way to just funnel this money into a bank account and let it sit.

Are there any precautions I should be taking, or any unknown rules I should know about when/if acquiring a second job? For example, does my HR or company get notified by any sort of outside source (such as when they send me my W-2) that another company is sending me a W-2?

What I have read online seems to be all over the place, and what I've generally come to the consensus of is that I can get a second job, and there shouldn't be any issue, just to make sure that I keep up the work for both jobs, if not, my "main" job which was already a given.....

It's genuinely embarrassing that you're trying to weasel out of something you said by saying that it didn't mean what it obviously meant. Its shit like this by the way which clearly makes you an awful "leader".

Nobody said anything about doing more than the guy next to you. This isn't people sitting at home putting ****ing Legos together. These are engineering projects and in particular new design projects for future new product launches. As these projects get more mature, some parts of the design fall into place easier and others get more complicated or run up against unforseen issues. At those times it is necessary to reallocate resources to the areas that need the help and pull resources away from the areas that are progressing well. To make those decisions, the manager really needs to understand everyone's actual bandwidth.

Truthfully, I feel like the type of workers doing this sort of project based work are much less likely to slack and tend to do what it takes to get the job done. I highly doubt that you really need to babysit for productivity on this sort of employee, as everything should come to light through status meetings, roadmaps, project schedules/slippages, etc. If someone is slacking, it will be painfully obvious.

It's kind of both, actually. It's a simple tradeoff of your time and skills versus company resources. You are nothing more to them than a tool, and they are nothing more to you than a paycheck. You have to prove your value in a position of need to be paid more. They must pay adequately for you to provide your services. If you think you provide more value than their compensation indicates, you are free to test the free agent waters. If they don't value your contributions, then they'll leave you to rot (since most places generally don't just outright fire people for lack of performance these days). Neither side owes the other anything else.

You're right, Geoffrey. You couldn't handle working for me. I handed out a few six figure bonuses last week and a total of 1.5 million in bonuses overall, but my people hate working for me.

You know absolutely nothing about me. You came into a thread unprovoked and decided to act tough and call me a pussy. I guess that shows excellent leadership on your part. I am not weaseling out of anything. If I was threatening to "kick your ass", I would have stated that. If I was 100% joking, I would have asked you to meet me at the George Brett statue.

That's pretty accurate to be honest, know what you're getting into etc. Some people think being the hardest worker gets you ahead...that really isn't the case anymore.

Yep, always goes back to managing your career effectively, openly communicating with your managers, etc.

Hell, even back in high school I went from one shitty job with the worst managers I've ever had to making more money 2 nights/week bussing tables than I was making at 30hrs/week... a couple people had left and came back to recruit me over.

And these days it's the same... IT people poach the best of the best. In a shitty situation, come work here instead.

It's not just about getting ahead at one company, it's about keeping yourself marketable enough to move on.

Working hard definitely doesn't guarantee you'll one day retire and buy a yacht, but being lazy and shitty practically guarantees you'll forever be stuck being lazy and shitty, usually while rationalizing it all away.

LoneLeader: Oooohhhhh everyone look at how much money I dish out to my subordinates! I'm not bragging about how successful and wonderful I am (you're not) but rather it's super dooper important that I disclose the "6 figure bonuses" because it shows how great I am. It really isn't me trying to unsubtly tell you that I'm rich or anything. Don't take it like that!

I've shown you up for being an arsehole and you've now reduced yourself to dick size measuring. All in a good day's work (4 hours of screen time).

I have a few design engineers that report directly to me that work from home. I get a weekly report from IT on how many hours they are actually working. It shows time actually spent on the computer actually working, meeting times where they are engaged in on-line meetings, and "idle" time. I don't expect the number of working hours to equal 40 each week because I know that is unrealistic, but anything lower than 35-36 hours and I will definitely take notice. If someone had a 20 hour week, they would be terminated unless they had a damn good explanation.

And before someone gets on here and says something about me typing this out during work hours, I have been up working since 4 a.m. and my last meeting of the day ends at 5:30 p.m. so I am definitely putting in my time.
At every programming job I've ever had there are busy times and down times. W/o fail if you ask your boss for work in the down times, they will a) be annoyed with you, and b) give you some busy work that no one cares if you do it or not. (In programming, these would be side projects that you do for learning, or that could potentially be helpful to the business some day. Some programmers love them. I run out of steam pretty quick. I need the pressure of having to deliver something that internal or external customers care about.)

This even goes back to working shit temp jobs. Ask the boss for something to do, he'll be visibly annoyed and tell you to go sweep out some part of the shop that no one ever sweeps. The message is always clear - don't bother me. But also of course don't make me look bad by getting caught sleeping on the job. Just look busy and stay out of the way.

It sounds like you keep your workers busy and take that part of the job seriously. But in my experience most bosses don't. They just want you to accomplish certain things, and beyond that leave them alone and don't make their jobs any more difficult than they already are.

Your choice but then you will complain the company never does anything for you and you’ve been at the same salary for five years.

The company doesn't do anything for you either way! The easiest way to get a pay raise is to switch companies.
