Movies

Yeah, so I saw a lot of movies this weekend.

Elizabeth: The Golden Age - Mediocre, at best. Slow and dragged on. Shorten it to 2 hours and it's golden. It's not, so it fails.

Michael Clayton - Amazing. Everything about it is awesome. However, it's VERY complex and mind bending. You have to think, so be prepared. I still feel like I'm missing key details of exactly what happened. Gotta see it again.

Across the Universe - Perfect is one word that comes to mind. It just works. And, contrary to many people I bet, the movie is best viewed sober. Trust me.

A single man was probably the best movie I have seen in 2010 so far.

Just watched this and thought it was excellent. As you said, adult only, but those parts were just elements to a story....they didn't overtake the movie IMO. It's very long, but worth the time for those that haven't seen it.

Yep, it's a clinic in adaptation to boot.

I don't mind them making an English language version, but the Swedish Lisbeth will be very hard to match. I think they have committed to shooting in Sweden, though, so that's good. Some of the most important parts of her and Mikael's characters are defined by their previous interaction with the Swedish state, and I don't think it would be easy to set it in the US in particular.
I've been waiting for the Rio to get the second one. What market you live in?

I am actually interested to see the English version because the books are dark and Americans usually dumb down their versions. So, we shall see.

I hadn't heard that casting note either. Weird, I'm usually up on that stuff.

I would, however, be surprised if Natalie Portman didn't get the lead. She wants to do it, she's got the build, and she's shown she can do darker/challenging roles (V for Vendetta). Of course, they could go "unknown". Personally, I didn't quite like the Swedish cast of Lisbeth but it was acceptable.

I think it only seems long because of the exposition it must get across for the bookend pieces that are 2 and 3. It does drag in the middle slightly, I'll agree.

Have either of you guys read the books?

On the length, I was just making the point for anyone that hadn't seen it that you'd need to commit 2 1/2 hours of your time (so plan accordingly). Probably wasn't clear enough. It didn't "seem" long to me at all, as I was entertained throughout.

I haven't read the books, but I'm intrigued enough to look into it now that I've seen the movie.

Renoir was definitely using deep focus a little before Citizen Kane.

I'm in LA. It's been out about a month here. Hornet's Nest opens Oct. 15th.

I loooove the Swedish Lisbeth. Physically, she was exactly how I had pictured her while reading. The small but strong, scrappy body, I really believe could win a dirty fight if backed into a corner, is something I never quite buy from most American heroines, even the ones in darker stories.

It would be quite a transformation for Natalie Portman to pull off, as she is such a girly girl, but I like some of her work, and am willing to give her a chance if they do cast her. I totally buy Pride and Prejudice and Zombies casting her, as she definitely has ass-kicking Elizabeth Bennett in her.

I'd be down with Portman. But the first rumor I heard had Carey Mulligan attached. Of course, I haven't read the book, so I don't know how she "fits", but that chick (Carey) blows me away. She's remarkable on stage and screen. If she's really interested, I'd cast my vote toward her.

The star hinted at Ellen Page or Evan Rachel Wood. The former has shown she can do dark (Hard Candy) the latter I'm not sold on.

It also had an inner page spread on the Swedish actor playing Lisbeth. Holy hell what a transformation.

Again, I don't know the character, but I like Evan Rachel Wood. She's interesting...

And flashbacks were around before Citizen Kane, even in American movies, but I definitely remember The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (German) being told in a long flashback.

Caught parts of Terminator Salvation (or whatever it's called) on TV the other day.

It's way more terrible than I remember. The acting is mind bottling.
