Calling CDCox / anyone smart with math.. please

I'm taking a kamikaze run at a statistics test that will allow me to bypass the GRE at 10 a.m. tomorrow.

I can figure out how to get standard deviation of one set of data (example: number of pages in a set of books) but don't know how to determine "mean for the set of data" for something like:

Students at CP University and their majors

xxxxxxxx | Male ------ Female ----- Total

BIOLOGY 10 ------- 20 --------- 30
BUSINESS 25 ------- 30 ---------- 55
PHYSICS 5 -------- 3 --------- 8
THEATER 5 -------- 7 ---------- 12
UNDECIDED 20 -------- 15 --------- 35

TOTAL 65 ------ 75 -------- 140

..... so.. the **** do I do...?

You haven't really asked a question here, you've only supplied a set of data. A mean is an expected value, but to keep it simple, just think of it merely as an average. Given this set of data, there are several means one could ask for. Additionally, you can't derive a standard deviation without a mean, so I'm not really sure what you calculated.

I'm going to say this and I mean absolutely zero offense with it, but if you have a test tomorrow and you're struggling with this part of it, it isn't going to go well.

Right but it doesn't ask for a specific mean, so that couldn't be the answer...

Kicker is I've messed around with large data sets before in a college class and was able to make a statistically backed argument in a essay. All you had to do was make sure that the tests of significance bared out a correlation: I did whether or not a measure of trust in government affected voting behavior.. But the idea of figuring out a mean of a population comprised of two samples with 5 variables is hard to grasp for whatever reason.

This sentence is nonsensical for more than one reason, but suffice it to say, as stated in the OP, "the mean for the set of data" is a meaningless statement. No pun intended.

Yeah, dude. You're basically asking us to answer the question "How is?" How is what?

The idea is that I'm fairly certain you can't find a general mean of such a question.. The study material I was given has a graph showing highest education level split along gender lines.. And it also doesn't seem to relate to the rest of the questions on the study guide.
