How do you feel about Panda Express?

Had it today for lunch.

Orange Chicken with some of that fried rice stuff and egg roll stuff.

Delish!

What are some of your faves?

I think people prefer the ones with bones because that's insurance against processed meat.

Potayto-potahto.

I haven’t seen a Chinese Dollar Bowl in 20 years or more?

Hollywood and DTLA have been undergoing massive regentrifaction in the past decade, with a metric shit ton more on the horizon, so all of those old strip malls and such are being razed in placement of new high rise condos and hotels.

The Hollywood my kids are growing up in is nothing like the Hollywood of 20-30 years ago and while that’s great for the area, property values and those that can afford the “New” LA, I’ll always have a soft spot for the gritty, dirty and ugly old places that are long gone.

Panda Express is just fine. I go through there about twice a year and I'm always pretty satisfied with all of their products. I like the honey walnut shrimp quite a bit.

My experience was in 99, basically lived on cheap taco joints and Dollar Bowl... every once in a while, if we'd made some money as extras or my buddy made some with his band, we'd go to a proper little restaurant off Alvarado for fish tacos

Panda Express isn't bad. For the same money I can find better with larger portion size.

Yup. The difference is astounding. I used to have a buddy that lived off of LaBrea and Sycamore 20+ years ago, so I remember walking around Hollywood and the Blvd back in the day. It was rough back then, smelled like piss, and you really had to watch your back. I was down there recently, and the 'feel' of Hollywood is nothing like it used to be.

Echo Park is another place sort of like that. Total gangland shithole back in the day, now it's all hipsters.

I had to smile a little reading these posts...the last time I was out in Denver, I was driving along for my next appointment in Thornton and I came across this place called "$1.29 a scoop" - Chinese joint. I figure "What the hell" and stop in...wasn't bad.

Olathe - there used to be a place called "Pings". That place was GREAT!! Best egg rolls in the county. They closed top several years later and I've never heard of them since.

I was in LA back in the 60s. Wasn't bad. The Strip was "different". Went back in 2010. Never again. Same with San Diego. Not my cup of tea.

Looking at things through teenage eyes and looking at things through old man eyes makes a world of difference. No thank you.

I can go to a place called Hunan Garden in Gladstone and get a large order of orange chicken, large order of shrimp lo-mein, two sides of fried rice, double serving of egg drop soup and six crab rangoon for $25. And it's always money.

But Panda definitely serves its purpose if you need something quick and don't want to get out of a car (i.e. got a baby strapped in the car seat).

Not mine either really. I rarely go over the hill, only when I have to go to the office on Wilshire Blvd. Which is every two or three months. I live in the North Valley, and pretty much stick to my neighborhood or the Mountains where our cabin is. I am a country boy by heart.

Echo Park is where I was, we used to drive around almost trying to get lost just to see what we could see... and in places you could almost imagine what old LA was like

You'd drive through a little neighborhood and get the wafting scent of citrus trees coming through the window, see little bungalow apartments that were ran down that were surely something pretty snazzy looking back in the day

Our next door neighbor was a fat old retired prostitute/drug dealer named Jeannie, a Mexican gal... we came home one day and found a wad of cash at least 5k strong on the sidewalk leading up to the apartments

I wanted to keep it

But my buddy intuitively knew she was hooked into the local gang and demanded 'lets take that shit to Jeannie, guarantee its hers and if we **** her on it all these Mexican gangbangers are gonna come looking for it'

So we turned it over to her, and never had a lick of problem with anyone in that seedy little neighborhood... he'd had some minor problems before I got there, but it was almost like that act had gained us some kind of immunity

We used to watch Dodgers games on tv, and 5 seconds after the Air Force flyovers on tv, we'd rush out to the porch and they'd come right over our place

Good times, experiencing that place enriched me

Yep. We lived in Phoenix back in the day (Old man was in the military) and after he retired, he worked as a Engineer at Dunhill Records. Used to hang out with the guys from Steppenwolf and still get the occasional Christmas card from John Kay...

After that we moved back East - and I never had occasion to head back that way. After Viet Nam - I landed at LAX - and wandered around for a couple of hours (6 hour layover). The place seemed to have changed a great deal from the early - middle 60s to the late 60s.

Got on the plane and headed home - never to go back until 2010. My God.....Nope. Either one of us changed or both of us had changed - Dramatically. I have no desire to EVER head back there and can't see any reason why that would happen. California is NOT the place it used to be.
