Off Season Lets Talk Guns

Been a while since we had a guns n' ammo discussion.

Some of you are AR shooters Im sure. Im looking at a Colt 6920. Will be my first AR. Picked up a Glock this fall and really enjoy shooting it. Any feedback on that weapon?

Anyone else been in a buy/sell/trade mood with hardware?

yah, I've heard good things about Marlin rifles and I don't have one so that is another reason I went with the Marlin. Whoever owned it took nice care of it and yah, it wasn't dirt cheap, but I figure you get what you pay for.

Yeah, that may be my next buy, I still have to make it out and put some rounds through the new Mariln 45/70 guide rifle I bought a couple of months ago. With a record year of snow, I may have to wait until spring, which with the way things are going may be July.

Big fan of Marlins micro grove barrels

In 1953 Marlin Firearms was issued U.S. Patent 3,100,358 for what was named MicroGroove Rifling, which was a departure from the standard "Ballard," or cut rifling. One purpose of Microgroove rifling was to increase the speed of producing rifle barrels. Microgroove rifling is described in the patent as having 5 grooves for every 1/10 of an inch bore diameter, and that the driving side of each land would be "tangentially disposed" to prevent accumulating fouling in use.

Marlin introduced Microgroove rifling in their .22 rimfire barrels in July 1953, with 16 grooves that were .014" wide, and nominally .0015" deep. Ballard rifled barrels have grooves generally in the range of .069-.090" wide, and .0015-.003" deep. This change was marketed in the 1954 Marlin catalog, as having numerous advantages that this new form of rifling had, including better accuracy, ease of cleaning, elimination of gas leakage, higher velocities and lower chamber pressures. The catalog also claimed that Microgroove rifling did not distort the bullet jacket as deeply as Ballard rifling hence improving accuracy with jacketed bullets at standard velocity.

Designed for factory loaded ammunition, Microgroove barrels have a reputation for accuracy problems with centerfire ammunition handloaded with cast lead bullets due to the increased bore diameter generated by the shallow grooves. The use of oversized cast bullets greatly solves this problem, restoring accuracy with cast bullet handloads to levels seen from Ballard rifled barrels.[4] Early Marlin .30-30 microgroove barrels had a twist rate of 1 turn in 10 inches optimized for factory ammunition with jacketed bullets; later Marlin .30-30 microgroove barrels show a twist rate of 1 turn in 10.5 inches which improves accuracy with cartridges loaded to lower velocity than standard.

Done said to hell with it concerning all other weapons, its an AR for me or nothing, the only two things I gotta have are an adjustable tactical stock and a chrome lined barrel for rust prevention... all had rather cheaply when buying used, have 2/3 of what I need to get one already.

AR's are definitely pricey... but the familiarity of cleaning and operation, ease of finding parts and ammo seal the deal for me.

Shotguns, shotgun pistols, handguns, larger game, smaller game... an AR in the hands of someone familiar with them can cover all of those bases in one fell swoop.

No no, definitely wanna hear your take, the Judge may well end up being my handgun of choice due to its versatility... the post you're referencing was more about which weapon is the PRIORITY, which one do I have to have first above all.

That's my saddle gun of choice. It has been for years. The mdl 1895 with 20" barrel is accurate enough and the action is strong enough to take some really hot loads. The only rifle to take into bear country.

That's exactly why I bought it. If you need some bad ass bear thumpers, here's a great choice. They don't give them away and they will kick like a mule, but one doesn't shoot them at paper.

yeah they aren't much fun! They do give you a comforting feeling though. The only real problem is , If you're trying for a big bull out at 250 yds plus it's kind of like dropping in mortar rounds, lots of elevation needed.

ps; My side arm now days is a ss Anaconda with the 6-3/4 inch barrel. I used to pack a 357 but then I saw the video of the ranger doing a release on a young sow grizzly over in the sunlight basin. She came out of the barrel trailer turned a 180, went right up the side of the trailer and took him right to the ground. He was carrying a 357 and he emptied it into her at point blank range. She finally died but not before she expressed her displeasure. She was a little one about 5 or 6 hundred pounds.

Its been a busy morning. Went all over town grabbing whatever .22 ammo I could find, plus a couple boxes of 9mm.

Also picked up my brand new underfolder AK! It arrived on Monday, but wasn't able to meet up with my local FFL guy until today. I need to clean it up a little, take some pics, and head to the range.

Yeah I've seen that video, the poor bastard. If I'm in an area with a lot of thick willows on foot, I pack my .500 with doubletap hardcast rounds.

you're lucky to find any at all. I haven't seen anything but subsonic on the shelf for months. Congrats on the AK.
