What type of camera? You can download a free .NEF codec for Nikon raws and .CR2 codec for Canon raws, then use a photo editing program like Lightroom, GIMP or Photoshop to edit and convert.

GIMP can just take a folder full of RAW pics and convert it to whatever format you like. GIMP is a wonderful , free tool if you do not have something like ADOBE or other things... There are other ways to do it...which we can explain to you...but GIMP is also so useful as something you can do anti-red-eye, and correcting the color balance, sharpening, adding text...etc....that you REALLY should check it out. I am unaware of ANY better free product out there, that can do SO MUCH like GIMP can. tl;dr: GIMP all the way

One other thought:
Its possible since you already converted them to JPEG format, that they were simply too large to be recognized by whatever machine they had at sams (I have no idea..this is a pure out of my ass guess, never even been to sams) You could try making some smaller ... and see if that works.

Yep, their printers can't handle that amount of data... You can try a converter which would require downloading an app but the ones I've tried are bad.
You should get those to someone with Photoshop CS6 or Photoshop "CC" Creative Cloud or Adobe Lightroom... that has an updated RAW plug-in (the software that recognizes the proprietary RAW data created by the camera). You can then have them saved out as JPEGs rather quickly in batch. If you don't have someone to help you could always download your own trial of CC but if your computer is older than say 3 years it won't run efficiently. Essentially you have files with so much image data you can't even look at them let alone get them printed. |

I still have the R2 format of the files too, if I use GIMP will that reduce the size somehow?

you can edit one file at a time in GIMP quite easily
setting it up to do groups of files is a bit tricker, but doable yes you can change the pixel size are you doing a ton of files? post back up in this thread if you need help! Once you install GIMP youre half way there you sexy wildebeeste

In case you missed it from TribalElder's fine post, you'll need UFraw to open raw files with gimp.
If youre on a mac, GIMP might have UFRAW built in If youre on PC or Linux, you might need to install the Ufraw plugin, as Tribals instructions recommend
