Apple Watch

http://www.npr.org/blogs/thetwo-way/..._campaign=news

After months of rumors and dozens of fan-created images of what an Apple watch might look like, the tech giant will show us what it's been working on today, when it's expected to unveil a new smartwatch at a splashy event in Cupertino, Calif.

We'll be updating this post with news from Apple today, including tweets from NPR's Laura Sydell, who's at the event at the Flint Center.

LOL WUT?

I develop for both and it's not even close. Moto360 works with 80% of the world's smartphones, Apple Watch works with less than 15%.

Although the Apple crowd has more disposable income so in that regard you have a higher % of potential buyers. You may see a spike based on Apple's marketing machine which blows everyone else away. But if people decide smart watches are a must have item, all Apple is doing is paving the way for Android devices to yet again take over. The main issue is that right now smart watches (of any flavor) aren't particularly compelling devices.

Speaking of paving the way. Apple's adoption of NFC (finally) has many predicting a huge boon for Google Wallet. When Android people see the Apple marketing of NFC they will want it. At which point Google, Samsung and others will wake up and point out to them that they already have it and have had it for years.

No. The problem is that when you never give them any credit, it's difficult to take anything you say as a legitimate criticism. If everything they do doesn't measure up to X company's product, then it's a failure for you.

I will however continue to shit all over you fanboys.
Noting that you're an Apple hater does not make me a fanboy. If I were a fanboy, I'd be buying this watch sight unseen.

However, I would point out that we haven't really seen what software capabilities it has, and that's something we need to see before we can really judge it substantively. If its "health" features aren't any better than my $80 Withings pulse, then it's worthless to me. Most people already have their phones out most places they go, so any time I could look at a watch to tell me something, I'll probably already be looking at my phone, rendering that part useless. That's a problem I have with ALL of these watches. They need to do something innovative, and so far, none really do.

The NFC thing is hilarious. Our retail store's POS company that we use sent out an email after the keynote talking about what NFC means for us as customers of theirs now that Apple has it.

The whole NFC thing has largely flown under the radar until Apple does it. I realize that they don't have market share. That they make devices that are far behind the curve. That they don't innovate. Yet... when they do something.. it becomes the market standard and pushes the mainstream there.

I think that's really the reason that the apple haters hate them. Apple bashers are the hipsters of the computer world.

iWatch might be something I will look into, but only after the 3rd or 4th generation. No way I am getting one the first generation.

Tim Cook announced Tuesday the release of Apple’s long-rumored watch, the latest in wearable technology. Here are some features of the new device:
  • 13-megapixel camera enables users to take crystal-clear pictures of wrist
  • Allows wearers to start and stop the flow of time
  • Discreet, but not so discreet that anyone would mistake it for a regular watch
  • Comes in a variety of colors and styles to express your personal submission to the planet’s dominant tech company
  • Adjustable ticking volume
  • All the convenience of a traditional watch that needs to be charged every 12 hours
  • Built-in thinkpiece regarding the increased connectivity yet simultaneous isolation of the millennial generation
  • Small size and intricate circuitry able to drive twice as many Chinese workers to suicide as iPhone
  • Makes it easier for muggers to see whether or not you’re carrying an expensive electronic device
  • Another screen to throw into your current rotation of things you look at

Completely true on NFC. Two big reasons for this. #1 Android doesn't have a single company behind it that is motivated to drive adoption. Closest you have is Samsung and they are all over the map and pretty much suck at marketing. #2 Apple kicks everyone else's ass (not just in tech but pretty much any industry) in marketing... so much so they have created a cult like following. I'm happy as hell that Apple finally will help drive NFC.

btw.. Apple fan bois are the hipsters of the actual world. Striving so much to be individuals by all doing the same shit.

Real hipsters of the real world aren't apple fan boys. The real hipster movement is to push away from tech and limit its importance in our lives to appropriate domains. Believe me, I deal with teenage apple fans on the daily, and they aren't hipsters.
