The 49ers have expressed to others that a deal for QB Alex Smith is effectively complete. Can't be finalized til league year begins 3/12

Jason La Canfora ‏@JasonLaCanfora

so it's not official, both clubs view it at as it's effectively done. I do not know the other team. KC and JAX are 2 teams that make sense

If Geno Smith is good enough to go 15th in this draft, he's good enough to go first.

Luke Joeckel is NOT a no-doubt franchise LT. He's not Walter Jones/Orlando Pace/Jon Ogden. Heck, he's probably not even Joe Thomas or Jake Long. And he's not the clear top LT. There is less separation between Joeckel and Fisher at this time than Geno and Barkley. Hell, there's less separation between Joeckel and Lane Johnson than Geno and Barkley.

There isn't a stud pass-rusher. Everyone has warts (and bigger ones than Geno at QB - Warner is raw and not an impact guy. Jones has spinal stenosis. And Moore is not an elite athlete).

Dee Milliner is a nice CB, but he isn't Shawn Springs or even Patrick Peterson.

If JaDaveon Clowney was in this draft, sure, you draft him and don't look back. Or you find an easy trade down partner, accumulate some more picks, and draft the guy you want at a pick a little further down.

But that's not the case. Who is a team going to trade into the first spot for? Joeckel? Why do that, when you can wait 4-5 more picks and get Fisher? Milliner? Come on. He's not that type of corner.

So take the trade down off the table. It's just like the Niners... stuck at 7 with Aldon Smith. Take the guy you want, who you know won't be there later, and don't look back.

The Chiefs don't NEED at OT or an OL, period. They have a strong, young offensive line that can all be retained easily. They don't NEED an OLB (two Pro Bowl players at that position, one locked in long-term and one young and cheap).

The only pick that makes sense and holds VALUE is QB.
OK. I'll give you that.

If nobody stands out from the crowd than maybe it isn't as big a reach as I'm thinking. I think in the perfect world tho the Chiefs should trade out of that pick. They may have to accept less than perfect value for it.

Failing that...if nobody is head and shoulders above him then you have a point. There are a few guys up there tho that I'd much rather have.

Yes. Like I said I don't mind his posts for the most part. Even what I disagree with at least comes from a place of sense from HIS perspective. Problem is he came in here suggesting we do things at positions we don't need to do them after we have heard it for what seems like ever now. To not expect heat from that is a little naive.

I don't think they even want the magic bullet.

Everybody realizes that drafting a QB MIGHT fail.

The problem is that we know the other method DOES fail, every time. We've lived it, MULTIPLE times.

most, if not all of the Geno-types (©) bitched about Orton's abilities before he played for the Chiefs, and I think you agree Orton was tons better than matt cackle, so why not plug Alex Smith in for a few seasons. There are guys on this team that are going to begin losing abilities due as they age -- guys like Tamba & DJ, Colquitt & others.

I don't know if the staff is thinking this way now, but they might be. They could groom Geno for a few seasons too.

Not only are they not a position of need, they are not a position in need of ANY sort of starter help. So why waste our 1.1 pick on them? Our once in 20 years chance to get THE guy we want, and 49er fan comes in here and starts telling us to take players at positions that have been solidified already, INCLUDING WITH A #1 PICK from a few years ago?

God damn Blackbob twin brother this guy is.

They only have a few years left so let's insert a guy we KNOW isn't good enough to win it all.

And you're damn right people bitched about Orton's abilities, he's dogshit. Just because he's from a different breed of dog than Matt Cassel doesn't mean he isn't.

This fanbase is absolutely ENTRANCED by shit QBs.

Yep. The argument has gotten twisted and defended to a degree that has made it seem more extreme than it really is. In the end the Geno support isn't that we think he is a lock, it's that we think that the chances of winning a SB with a retread QB(especially Smith) fall lower than the chances of a top QB in this draft working.

It's not that we think Geno ect= 85% chance of working. It's that we think Geno ect>Alex Smith/Flynn/Cousins
