It's not sung at little league baseball, soccer or football games.

It's not sung before I get my oil changed or enter Costco.

Why?

I have been saying this for a while. The solution to the problem is just stop doing it. It's a silly tradition at this point but we do it because 'Murica.

I don't think it's a silly tradition at all. There is so much diving all of us in our little groups... ethnicity, religion, politics, sporting teams, etc. etc. etc. It 2 minutes of standing up and recognizing that above all of those divisions is one over-arching thing that unites all of us.

Right or wrong, the protest is happening because some Americans don't feel that one over-arching thing that unites all of us. It's not there for them, and they blame the government for that. They feel the government is actually dividing us instead of uniting. Right or wrong, they have the freedom to feel that way and peacefully speak out.

Sure, but until they start moving beyond general criticism, they are not entitled any more reverence or respect for their protest than the flag and those who do hold reverent feelings for it do.

And I actually agree that the government is actually dividing us and not uniting us. But in my opinion, that is not the fault of the flag. Protest out in front of the white house all you want, because the government is composed of people and people are inherently flawed. The idea of America is not flawed. The symbolism of the flag is pure.

On a side note, I was in a meeting a while back and made a little joking comment about getting PTSD about a controversial issue. A woman came up to me later and said, "I'm a veteran and you need to be more sensitive about referencing PTSD." What, are veterans the only people who can talk about PTSD any more?

Some of us veterans are pretty self righteous, bro. When I was walking through the Arrowhead parking lot after the Charles fumble loss to Denver last year, there was a drunken female veteran berating some poor fellow who she believed didn't clean up his tailgating area well enough.

She was cursing at him, yelling, trying to fight him, all while being held back by family.

How did I know she was a veteran, you ask? At one point she yelled, "I'm a veteran and I fought for your right to tailgate and leave your trash everywhere!"

This was apparently a normal interaction for this lovely young lady, because the entire time her family was holding her back one of them kept telling her that she has to stop fighting every one else's fights.

Quite the scene.

The irony is that soldiers are just people and care about the flag and the national anthem about as much as the normal joe. The only difference is they are regulated to honor these things with salutes and standing at attention.

In my experience most soldiers would alter their movement around Reveille and Retreat\To the Colors.

"Hey Joe, let's go to the mess hall."

"Yeah OK, but lets wait 15 minutes so we don't get stuck outside during retreat."

What do you think happens when a bunch of guys are standing 15 feet from the barracks door and retreat starts? They scramble like cockroaches when the lights are turned on.

I'm less offended by CK's actions than the actions of Joe Blow in the stands who can't be bothered to remove his hat or shut his ****ing mouth for a few minutes while the anthem play. Before 9/11 it was really bad, atleast everybody stands now.
