2017 Rookie QB Watch thread

Since there was so much debate about who to draft figured this would be a fun thread.

First up Deshaun Watson: 15-for-25 for 179 yards. He also had three carries for 24 yards and a rushing touchdown. He had a sweet rushing TD. Still think he would have been a good fit here.

I really want this book considering we have our rookie QB now.

http://www.stltoday.com/sports/footb...ddf0b337e.html

Longtime NFL writer Thomas George has written an entertaining and incisive book about the development of franchise quarterbacks — "Blitzed: Why NFL Teams Gamble on Starting Rookie Quarterbacks."

It's an insightful look into the evaluation and development of young quarterbacks, and in it, George talks to many players and coaches on the subject. George, who also writes for SBNation, provided quite a tease for the book, which comes out Sept. 5, on Tuesday on SBNation.

Quote:

Mike Martz was asked about the Los Angeles Rams' hiring of Sean McVay as head coach last offsesason. Suffice it to say, the straight-talking Martz was not a fan, at least in terms of how it might affect the development of 2016 No 1 overall pick Jared Goff at quarterback.

"What is he, a couple of months older than Jared?" Martz says in the book. "They hired a buddy for Jared. The NFL has nothing to do with being the friend or the buddy of the quarterback. You've got to coach them and work them hard with respect. But Buddy?

"And this guy is a quarterback expert? An offensive expert? Wait a minute while I puke.

"Right, he's going to be able to teach and handle and guide Jared through tough times because of all his expertise and knowledge? Right. I'm not going to drink that Kool-Aid."

In a radio interview Tuesday morning on ESPNLA 710, Martz said his remarks in the book were "embellished." George later denied that was the case.

Martz, now retired, splits his time between residences in San Diego and Idaho. He keeps his hand in the game by coaching the NFL Players Association Collegiate Bowl each year. As a favor to longtime college and NFL coach Ted Tollner, and his son Ryan Tollner — the agent to Goff and Carson Wentz — Martz worked out both quarterbacks one day during the pre-draft process in 2016.

Martz came away impressed with both players, but once the draft came — and Wentz went to Philadelphia and Goff went to Jeff Fisher's Rams — he told George in "Blitzed" that Goff couldn't have gone to a worse place for quarterback development in the NFL.

"Jared Goff?" Martz told George. "I don't know if he can play or not, but I do know he couldn't have gone to a worse place. If you look at him and switched him with Dak Prescott in Dallas, who knows what would have happened for Goff there.

"Goff at Cal came from an offense where they ran as many plays as they could — fast. Jared in college did an amazing job of throwing a true ball off-balance, under duress, making things happen. You knew the speed of the NFL would throw that kind of timing off. But he still throws a true ball the Rams wanted to rewire him to what?

"I watched the Rams offense last season. It was awful football. There was nobody there on that staff that could teach him, develop him. You have a high-value guy like that and he went to the worst offensive place, the Rams."

In replacing Fisher with McVay and a more quarterback-friendly staff, the thinking was it would aid in Goff's development. Martz, as stated in "Blitzed," has his doubts. At 31, McVay is the youngest head coach in modern NFL history. He was in high school the last time a Rams team reached the playoffs.

"You've got (quarterbacks) who just aren't very tough, just not competitive enough, who don't understand that the great ones don't say no — they find a way," Martz told George in the book.

"And then you've got what is probably the worst coached position in sports. Not enough of these coaches are clear. If you have a rookie franchise quarterback, each situation is different. It's difficult to measure if he should sit or play."

Texans rookie Deshaun Watson intercepted by Saints

NEW ORLEANS -- Deshaun Watson sailed the pass too high on a throw intended for wide receiver Wendall Williams.

The misfire became the first interception for the Texans' rookie backup quarterback as New Orleans Saints cornerback Damian Swann picked him off.

The first-round draft pick and national championship winner from Clemson had a tough game against the Saints during a 13-0 shutout loss Saturday night at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome.

Watson nearly had two other errant throws intercepted, but the Saints' defensive backs were unable to hold onto the football.

Watson finished the game 11 for 21 with 116 yards, no touchdowns and one interception for a 48.9 passer rating.

"It was all right," Watson said. "Overall, there's a lot of things to do to move the ball down the field and try to create some spark and get some points on the board, but it did not go our way. It's a good tape to learn from."

Texans & NFL Highlights
Operating with the Texans' reserves, Watson was pressured a lot by the Saints' front seven. He was sacked twice. He rushed for 10 yards on two carries.

A consensus All-American and Heisman Trophy finalist, Watson has flashed athleticism and poise throughout the preseason.

This marked the second consecutive game, though, that he had some issues. Watson completed only 3 of 10 passes against the New England Patriots a week ago.

"I thought there were some bright spots," Texans coach Bill O'Brien said. "They threw a lot of pressure at him, which is good for a rookie quarterback to see. I thought sometimes he handled it pretty well.

"He was able to throw the sight adjustment throw, the hot to a couple of guys. Other times maybe he missed it or maybe the receiver missed it. It's something where he's going to really watch the tape and really improve."

Watson is still adjusting to the increased speed of the NFL after dominating collegiate defenses, including Alabama, with his superior mobility and fast decision-making. It was reinforced clearly on Saturday that Watson still has some work to do as he continues to refine his skills at the professional level.

Tom Savage has been installed as the Texans' starting quarterback even prior to Watson's arrival via the NFL Draft.

What happened on the interception?

A hook read, the ball was just a little too high and he tipped it," Watson said. "The guy made a good play."

That status won't change heading into the Texans' season opener Sept. 10 against the Jacksonville Jaguars as Watson continues to gain experience and Savage maintains a game manager style of avoiding turnovers and making good decisions.

By all accounts, Watson has an outstanding work ethic. He intends to learn from this experience.

"Just overall being a better player, better teammate, better quarterback," Watson said. "Once I look at the film, I'll figure it out."

TAMPA -- DeShone Kizer clinched the Browns starting quarterback job Saturday night by passing his last big test in the dress rehearsal game here against the Bucs, sources told cleveland.com.

Kizer's number weren't great in the 13-9 victory, including a 28.2 rating, but he showed Jackson enough to beat out Brock Osweiler and Cody Kessler for the job and earn the opening day start against Pittsburgh Sept. 10 at FirstEnergy Stadium.

Kizer will become the 27th quarterback to start for the Browns since 1999 and the second rookie quarterback to start the opener behind Brandon Weeden, who lost 17-16 to the Eagles in 2012.

Kizer completed only 6-of-18 attempts for 93 yards, with no TDs and one interception on a deflected pass over the middle, but he didn't get much help from his supporting cast. Kenny Britt dropped a pass at the Bucs' 5 and Duke Johnson fumbled the ball away at the Bucs' 10.

"No doubt. It would be a whole different game for him,'' said Jackson. "That's why I feel good about the things that he accomplished tonight. I thought he came well prepared to play. Again, that was his first opportunity out there with those guys truly from start until we said, 'ok enough with the ones and I thought he showed well.' I thought he did some good things and we can build on some things as we move forward."

Jackson said heading into the game that Kizer would be named the starter as long as he didn't tank against the Bucs in the third preseason game.

"He did not fall flat on his face,'' said Jackson. "He didn't. Matter of fact, he did some things better than I thought he would, to be honest with you.''

Kizer connected three times with Corey Coleman, including once for a 32-yard sideline route on which he rolled to his left and put it where only the single-covered Coleman could get it. The receiver, who finished with four catches on the night for 66 yards, laid out for the ball and made a great catch -- the kind the Browns are going to need to see more of if Kizer is to be successful.

Coleman made two more acrobatic third-down receptions from Kizer, who went 5-of-9 for 56% on the money down in his one half of work.

Kizer, who faced a Bucs team that rested five defensive starters, lamented the fact that he went 0-for-2 in red zone TDs.

"A field goal in one and a fumble in another is unacceptable,'' he said. "Those need to be touchdowns in order for us to continue the success we have been having. But overall, it was an awesome opportunity to go out and compete against some ones with the ones and take the things that we have been doing in practice and apply them to a game situation."

It's possible that Peterman will be a Week 1 starter for Buffalo given Tyrod's concussion.

Mixed results from Peterman

On his first four possessions, Peterman and the first-team offense gained a total of 11 yards on 16 plays. Peterman's second and third series both lost yards, although both were stunted by illegal formation penalties against the offensive line that negated third-down conversions by Peterman. The rookie later took over the first-team offense with 2 minutes, 39 seconds remaining in the first half and led an 11-play, 83-yard drive that was assisted by a pass interference penalty by the Ravens in the end zone. Running back Mike Tolbert capped that drive with a 1-yard touchdown run. At times, Peterman looked decisive in the pocket and was accurate with his throws. At other times, including a play on which he was nearly intercepted on a pass thrown while he was being sacked, Peterman looked like a rookie. Overall, he finished 11-of-23 passing for 93 yards and a 58.8 quarterback rating before being replaced by T.J. Yates late in the third quarter. Yates was intercepted on his first pass.

QB depth chart: Beyond Taylor and Peterman, the Bills have only Yates, who initially ran the second-team offense in training camp before Peterman took over those duties in practice two weeks ago. It is unclear whether Taylor's concussion will cause the Bills to sign a fourth quarterback. They have an open spot on their 90-man roster and, unlike in past seasons when there was a cut down to 75 players, can keep all 90 for next Thursday's preseason finale against the Detroit Lions.

One reason to be concerned: Even before Taylor's concussion, the first-team offense looked out of sorts for a second consecutive preseason game. Taylor completed one of his three passes -- to slot receiver Brandon Tate -- for 1 yard, was sacked once and fumbled once. His offensive line, which continues to play without left tackle Cordy Glenn because of a foot injury, contributed to the problem. Buffalo also struggled to find early success with its running game, with LeSean McCoy gaining just 7 yards on six first-half carries.
