New KCI terminal wins in a landslide

Surprised by how overwhelmingly this vote was for in favor. wow

Quote:
After years of waiting, in a historic vote, a new Kansas City International Airport has finally been approved.

Voters turned out at the polls Tuesday and voted overwhelmingly to approve the construction of a new single-terminal KCI.

Perhaps the biggest surprise of the night was the vote spread in Clay County.

Clay County voters are among the most skeptical in the area. With 100 percent of Clay County Precincts reporting, yes votes took the issue in the county 71 percent to 29 percent against.

Numbers were similar in Platte County with 74 percent of voters in favor, and 26 percent against.

3. Not crowded
4. Clean for an old airport"
============= End of QUOTE from scho63 ================

If there is only a single security check in, yes it can be understaffed. But again, based on my experience at Sacramento, MCI is no quicker to get through the security line. Checking a bag at MCI usually takes longer than Sacramento based on my experience with Southwest.

Quick out if you didn't check luggage. If you checked a bag, then MCI is no faster than say the new terminal at Sacramento. And yes, I realize not everyone checks a bag. Even without checking a bag, I don't notice the difference. If someone is waiting in the designated area and you text them as soon as you land (and you didn't check a bag) I can pretty much make it to the curb before they do (sitting in the front of the plane) at either Sac or MCI.

Not crowded? There are airports that are worse. But once you go through the security gate, I would say it is often cramped and crowded.
I wouldn't even call KCI uncrowded in the pre-security area. Sure, that area is more than double what is needed, according to Slide 12 in this 2015 presentation to the City Council (https://www.flykci.com/media/1404/kc...ec-10-2015.pdf), but some of the components in that space are horrible. For example, that same presentation says that KCI has less than half of the baggage claim space than it needs. That definitely matches my experience. I almost always check a bag. At KCI, the claim area is squeezed into the narrow 72-foot concourses, taking up about half of the width. At Sacramento, you have loads of space to wait for your bag.

Anyway, I'm glad Kansas City is getting rid of those messed-up terminals. They had some nice features, like being able to see your family and friends almost immediately after deplaning, but all and all those terminals were not suitable for contemporary air travel. There's way too much space for some things and way too little space for other things. There's almost no way that a new terminal won't be well-received by Kansas Citians, once they experience it and consider how much more functional it is than the terminals it will replace. Any good team of airports architects should easily be able to come up with a terminal that provides a much better overall passenger experience than the current set of terminals. I've not made a study of it, but I've never seen a modern airport terminal that wasn't way better than KCI's current facilities.

Kansas isnt going to build an international airport. Acquiring land and getting it approved by the public and FAA is no easy matter. They are about as popular as new power generation plants no one wants it in their backyard. They might be able to force one in Parker or La Cygne.

The reason KCI is where it is was because TWA overhaul base was there along FAA proved runways built to accommodate jumbo jets and proposed SST that didnt happen.

I'll be sure to get to the airport 3 hours early so I can spend 2 hours in Shrek lines and 30 minutes drinking drinking. Fighting for a seat with one of the 12 people who layover at KCI because their ORD to DFW flight had to land because a Lav light went out.

I dont quite understand how anybody that flies would hate MCI, when compared to virtually all other airports. It just boggles my mind. For me, they have tons of direct flights to anywhere I go yearly. LA, Vegas, Chicago, Dallas, Denver. I park at the parking spot, and ten minutes later Im inside the security check. The food, Starbucks, magazine stands are all right in front of me for easy access. Never get lost. Always an easy walk to my terminal.

It appears much of you consider convenience a Cinnabon and a purty airport that you can tell ppl on Twitter "See we arent a small market anymore!!"

The choice of travel destinations is likely to improve with a better terminal. I don't park at KCI, but in Sacramento my choice of parking has similar costs as the Parking Spot at KCI, but my covered parking is right across the street from the terminal. From my car to past security is 10 minutes or less, including checking my bag, and then I have a far more comfortable place to wait for the plane. When you get the new terminal, I think you will be very pleased with it.

No, it isn't.

If enough demand were there for a direct flight to a particular destination, there'd be a carrier there taking the money.
