About Justin Houston..

Does anyone else think he has been playing pretty lazily early in games this year? Perhaps it has been a scheme thing, perhaps today he was still feeling some illness.. but I typically watch him on 75+% of the snaps and its like he is waiting until the 4th quarter to 'flip the switch'. He shuts down the run for 4 quarters, I am referring only to his pass rush.

He either gets dropped into coverage, or he will rush and give up on it if he doesn't win immediately. Then, the 4th quarter hits and we see the dominant, relentless Justin Houston that he used to be on every down.

Hopefully its just some sort of schematic thing going on. I'm glad he is still having a huge impact nonetheless with 4 sacks thus far, but I can't help but wonder if he is holding back effort. Lets hope that changes because the defense is damn good when he is rolling...

It's Chris Jones being double and triple teamed., just like Poe when he was healthy and beasting.

Jones forces the pocket to move at his volition. With refined techniques too swim, rip, and even spin moves. His freakish strength just owns OL when he bullrushes.

This is why sometimes you see Houston "give up", ie spy the QB so he can pursue when they leave the pocket. Sometimes its Houston, sometimes Ford/Zombo, depends on if they are stunting. It also lets them sniff out screens and make them waste a double team if they were planning on doubline Houston.

On the play where Houston got his sack - he lined up the exact same as all the previous plays where he was covering - then crashed the line at the last second. He definitely caught them of guard somewhat.

We need him right now to hold position, stuff the run, and occasionally go in coverage.

Every now and again we tell Hulk to smash...

Upon further review, I have come to some conclusions...

Re-watched the game. Sutton rushed 3 again A LOT. Very few times did he have Houston and Ford both going after Rivers at once. When Zombo came in, it wasn't much different. I bet Houston and Ford didn't both rush on the same play more than 5 times.

The only logical explanation I can come up with is that Sutton wanted to throw Brady and Rivers curveballs. They both are notorious for getting the ball out really fast. So, rather than try to get there with 4 like everyone does, Sutton came out and gave tons of different looks, typically only sending 3 defenders, with a sprinkle of blitzes and 4-man pressures... then, the QBs just sit back there looking for someone to throw to, with mostly everything covered. It resulted in a lot of throwaways and INTs yesterday.

Sutton has really picked his game up this year. So many more different, exotic alignments than past years. Hopefully he continues to keep offenses and quarterbacks guessing.

Sutton is playing the "Long Game" this year.

He's setting up QB's and offensive coordinators in the first half, then changing up looks and fronts at specific points in the game.

3 INT's and 10 points should be all the proof anyone needs that Sutton is on top of his game, which is why the Game Day thread is absolutely unbearable, especially when dipshits slam Sutton, continuously.

The great thing is that now, because of how he has been so unpredictable with his defenses, they will be even harder to gameplan for. Belichick can't just get ready for us in January and say, 'Well, lets just do the opposite of what we did week one'... It won't be that simple. Sutton could decide to bring 4 a lot more the next time around, or maybe he won't? Maybe he plays more man to man?

Matching that schematic brilliance with the defense's personnel talent is all this team ever needed to take the next step defensively.

I agree but man is Anthony Lynn terrible. It seemed like every damn pass play was a "chuck it up for grabs".

McCoy was easily a better game planner. Big step down for them.
