Does anyone else think he has been playing pretty lazily early in games this year? Perhaps it has been a scheme thing, perhaps today he was still feeling some illness.. but I typically watch him on 75+% of the snaps and its like he is waiting until the 4th quarter to 'flip the switch'. He shuts down the run for 4 quarters, I am referring only to his pass rush.

He either gets dropped into coverage, or he will rush and give up on it if he doesn't win immediately. Then, the 4th quarter hits and we see the dominant, relentless Justin Houston that he used to be on every down.

Hopefully its just some sort of schematic thing going on. I'm glad he is still having a huge impact nonetheless with 4 sacks thus far, but I can't help but wonder if he is holding back effort. Lets hope that changes because the defense is damn good when he is rolling...

What it looked like to me was that he knew that Rivers was getting rid of the ball quickly. So he'd rush and then back off a little bit to try and get his hands up to knock down passes.

Houston is a team leader and it's still early in the season. I'm not worried about him as long as his knees hold up.

Unless you watch him almost every snap like I do, it's probably not fair to question my position. I'm telling you, the guy has been quitting on his rush the past two weeks pretty damn fast, until the 4th quarter.

Dude makes plays. Is he getting as many pressures as prime Hali? No. But he's a beast against the run and he's more important player out there than Berry.

Rivers is one of the best in the league at getting the ball out quickly, so I have no doubt scheme played a large part today.

That said, I've never felt "motor" was one of Houston's best attributes. Regardless, he's playing well vs run and pass this year. I have a hard time finding fault in his game in 2017.

I've noticed this as well. Looks like he's damn near playing a spy sometimes. I'm not sure exactly why, maybe he's trying to get his hands up? Maybe he's playing clean up, waiting for the qb to get moved off his spot. I don't question his effort though. He has been an absolute stud against the run, and playing the run is far more difficult physically than rushing the passer. There is a reason why he's playing the way he's playing, but it isn't effort guaranteed.

He's an extremely disciplined player, almost to a fault times. He is almost never out of position on bootlegs, and misdirection plays. He's a true 2 gap type of player in how he holds a block, reads, and reacts. It almost seems like he takes that same apprach to pass rushing if he doesn't initially win. I'm not sure.

I'm sure he is. However, They tried him on the right quite a bit over the last couple of years and have basically given up.
