About Justin Houston..

Does anyone else think he has been playing pretty lazily early in games this year? Perhaps it has been a scheme thing, perhaps today he was still feeling some illness.. but I typically watch him on 75+% of the snaps and its like he is waiting until the 4th quarter to 'flip the switch'. He shuts down the run for 4 quarters, I am referring only to his pass rush.

He either gets dropped into coverage, or he will rush and give up on it if he doesn't win immediately. Then, the 4th quarter hits and we see the dominant, relentless Justin Houston that he used to be on every down.

Hopefully its just some sort of schematic thing going on. I'm glad he is still having a huge impact nonetheless with 4 sacks thus far, but I can't help but wonder if he is holding back effort. Lets hope that changes because the defense is damn good when he is rolling...

Re-watched the game. Sutton rushed 3 again A LOT. Very few times did he have Houston and Ford both going after Rivers at once. When Zombo came in, it wasn't much different. I bet Houston and Ford didn't both rush on the same play more than 5 times.

The only logical explanation I can come up with is that Sutton wanted to throw Brady and Rivers curveballs. They both are notorious for getting the ball out really fast. So, rather than try to get there with 4 like everyone does, Sutton came out and gave tons of different looks, typically only sending 3 defenders, with a sprinkle of blitzes and 4-man pressures... then, the QBs just sit back there looking for someone to throw to, with mostly everything covered. It resulted in a lot of throwaways and INTs yesterday.

Sutton has really picked his game up this year. So many more different, exotic alignments than past years. Hopefully he continues to keep offenses and quarterbacks guessing.
I think you are correct with this. We have had 122 passing attempts on our defense so far, which is the 2nd highest in the league, and only 61 completions. That's a 50% completion rate, which is the best in the NFL. Whatever Sutton is doing so far is working. It's frustrating sometimes for sure, but it's producing wins.

I've noticed this as well, it seems to be the scheme for this year. Houston will get his sacks in the 4th qrt when the other team is tired.

Not to take anything away from Sutton, but the 3 interceptions, or at least 2 of them, were mostly due to Rivers idiocy.

A ****ing RBs coach got the Chargers job, right? That's who Lynn is?

I think Andy Reid might be the only guy in NFL history to bypass ever being a coordinator in his time in the NFL before becoming head coach and actually have success.

Mike Tice. Rod Marinelli. Mike Singletary. Jim Tomsula. And now probably Anthony Lynn if I didn't get my stuff messed up

Yeah, I misread SNR's post. I thought he meant offensive and defensive coordinators.

They seem to want him dropping in coverage more this year. Maybe it is to rest his knee and keep him fresh for the 4th quarter. He is executing in the 4th so if I were a kc fan I wouldn't worry. Not sure why Chargers thought they should double Zombo and go one on one with Houston late in the game. That seemed stupid.

Houston is still very good vs the run.

The dropping could be because of lack of depth at ILB too trying to run some Zone Blitz's under the Man coverage on the outsides. Missing Berry and Johnson doesn't look like he has his top end speed though he is still playing well.

I also see him standing at the LOS on more plays than in the past, looks like he is trying to discourage screens and play run 1st rather than push it upfield and leave space behind him.

I guess last year the Bills fired Greg Roman and promoted Lynn early in the season to OC. He's off the list

That's what I'm seeing too. I don't know why people hate it. This is a chip Kelly quick release league and we have the antidote. And it's frustrating the shit out of a lot of qbs. The Chargers game was interesting because we threw a lot more rushers than usual. But there will be lots of games where we are going to rush less and force qbs to beat us without their safety valves.

We have to get it our of our head that more rushers means more pressure. Pressure means nothing if the other qb consistently finds open targets pre snap.

Re-watched the game on DVR last night. Houston rushed 1 time in the first quarter. This staff is being smart and keeping guys fresh.

I don't like Zombo, but it was hot as **** out there and Houston was just sick earlier in the week. No reason to work him when you're up 14. Save him until the end when you really need him.
