25 Dead as Crews Search for Missing After West Virginia Floods

This story is a few days old but we had horrible storms that rolled through Northern Virginia several days ago but the devastation and magnitude of loss in West Virginia is NOT something we normally see in the US. To have 25 people die in floods in the US is more like from the 20's or 30's when people didn't know what the weather was going to be.

They even cancelled the PGA tour event at the Greenbriar due to this and the Greenbriar took in people displaced by this.

http://www.nbcnews.com/news/weather/...rginia-n599181

The sun finally made an appearance Sunday in rain-weary West Virginia, where floods have killed at least 25 people and destroyed dozens of homes.

The break in rain and receding floodwaters allowed for search and rescue teams to go door-to-door, finally, to search for people who hadn't been heard from since the downpours began Thursday.

Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin's administration believed people were still missing in Greenbrier County, where 17 people were killed.

Residents in the Greenbrier town of White Sulphur Springs, even those who lost everything, were trying to stay positive.

"It's actually good to see the community pull together in something like this because this town has never faced anything like this. This is the worst disaster ever, that I know of," resident Nick Glover told NBC station WVVA.

President Barack Obama on Saturday signed a federal disaster declaration for the state and called Tomblin to promise recovery resources.

Sunday marked the first day that people could apply for Federal Emergency Management Agency aid in Greenbrier, Kanawha and Nicholas counties, Tomblin announced in a tweet.

Six deaths were reported in Kanawha, in addition to one each in Jackson and Ohio counties.

By Sunday night, more than 10,000 homes and businesses across the state remained without power, according to the West Virginia Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Management. The number was down from 24,000 the night before.

Tomblin declared a state of emergency Friday in 44 counties throughout the state, saying the flooding was "the worst in a century" for many areas. He said he would seek further assistance for those counties. About 500 homes were damaged just in the county of Roane, with about 15,000 residents, according to the Division of Homeland Security.

"We realize many other counties experienced significant damage and we will be following up in those areas," Tomblin said.

I was just in West Virginia on vacation. We passed through this area a few days before the flooding. We were going to camp out at one of the State Parks but it started raining. Scary to think we drove on some of the same roads that are now rivers.

It was my first time in the state-the last of three I have not visited-two left. I was very impressed, the people were nice and the Mountain State was incredibly beautiful. Such a shame.

What are the last two states on your list? Hawaii and Alaska?

That is correct. After seeing how amazing WV is-I am looking forward to going back as soon as I can.

They have the most beautiful State Capitol I have ever visited. All white marble.

I go to Charles Town once in a while to gamble at the Hollywood Casino and I also have some clients whose properties I have to check out in Martinsburg. Both on the eastern part of the state bordering Virginia. Both are kind of run down areas.

Having been hit by a massive flood (Nashville Flood of 2010) and experiencing first hand the damage flood water can do (river crested at 4 feet into my single story house) my heart breaks for the people of WV.

It's flooding here. I have a river instead of a street and the water is up to my front porch.

I called in for the day I don't want to drift away in my car.

WOW-that's some serious rain especially if it's been very dry.
