EAT!!!
Even if you're not a party guy, I think everyone should experience Bourbon Street at least once. Also, the cemeteries are really cool. |

My wife is from there. We are there right now. Don't leave here without dining at Irene's Cuisine. On Chartres near Jackson Square. It's our favorite. Rob Ryan's favorite, too. Go to Fat Catz on Bourbon Street during the week. House band there, the Connection Band, is the best. Check out Frenchman Street for great jazz. As for safety just don't wander onto dark streets. You will be fine.

I once married a gal from NOLA - this is all based on her recommendations 25 years ago. But it's surprising how little really changes there.
For breakfast at least once - Callas at the Coffee Pot, callas is a yeasted rice fritter, an old time NOLA breakfast, their 'Lost bread' (French toast) is also very good. http://www.theoldcoffeepot.com/menu.php Commander's Palace was a fave for lunch - their lunch menu is about half price what their dinner rates are. I recommend their bread pudding souffle w/whiskey sauce for dessert if it's available. We'd always stay somewhere in 'da quartah' and take the Street Car to within 2 blocks of Commanders - let the driver know that's where you're going, he'll let you out at the right spot. Another street car can take you back. Another good reason to go @ lunch - walking around w/just 2 folks after dark is not encouraged. There are a lot of bad folks who prey on tourists - luckily, the ex grew up w/most of 'em and just said 'mind your manners!' - that might not work for you. I happen to like muffaletta sandwiches from the Central Grocery. Split one between several folks, buy more if you're still hungry (the secret to NOLA eating is to share good things, then go buy more good things, so you're never hungry, but you're never too full for more good things!). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Muffuletta Nearby - cawfee & beignets @ Cafe du monde if you need a snack This one may not be on everyone's list, but this was the ex's family fave http://www.frenchquarter.com/dining/GrandeDames.php They'd all recommend Tujagues, the 2nd oldest joint in the city. They have a good price fixe dinner and I usually opt for that unless I'm way too full - in which case I sit in the bar and eat their garlic chicken - wasn't on the menu, but my brother-in-laws all drank there in the olden days and insisted every out of towner try it. Delish. Have a sazerac cocktail while you're there as well. They do a good one. They'll sneak up on you if you're not used to 'em. Luckily, I'd learned to make 'em for the ex, so I was used to 'em. They still sneak up on ya. As noted by several folks, NOLA can get dangerous after the sun goes down. Walk in groups if you must walk - we always just took a cab after sunset, even if it was only a few blocks. "Don't get excited, call United!" being the local suggestion. The city park is worth a drive thru to look at the live oaks. We spent most of our time at my mother in laws house playing 'booray', a penny ante card game that gets vicious when you lose a certain way and have to match the pot. http://www.bicyclecards.com/card-games/rule/booray

You may get tired of eating/drinking/looking at teeshirt shops & naked boobs (eventually) - they'd take me to the mardi gras supply stores, which you won't find elsewhere. Some interesting beads, masks, etc...here's one out in Metarie, where you're less likely to get robbed by the crack ho's
http://www.mardigrasbonanza.com/adva...n+mask&x=0&y=0 We used to plan trips from NOLA according to where the frozen daquiri shops could be found just off the freeway. They had booze - but not much - in 'em, so I shouldn't recommend these trips today. But the ex liked to have a good time, and driving thru the country to find a frozen daquiri or a boudin ball (basically, a ball of rice mixed w/sausage and deep fried. Heart attack city, but delish) was mo' bettah than just watching the tourists go past (not that there's anything wrong w/being a tourist - but the local yokels try to get away from 'em now and then) This is the website of the NOLA Times-Picayune - the old local newspaper. Watch for events, look for recipes, etc...have fun down there. I sure did! http://www.nola.com/events/

I would definitely recommend getting a Hand Grenade drink. I don't know what the **** is in that thing, but I was fine before I had that, and after I drank 1 or 2 of them I was completely piss on a cop drunk
When I went there we went to some gator swamp tour. It was pretty cool, but be sure to get the real hillbillies who have the air boats. They feed those crazy gators marshmellows and they go crazy

1. If you like outdoors, your timing sucks - should go during hunting season and you might have scored a cochon de lait (cajun for a suckling - hence the 'milk' - pig but mostly used to describe a pig cooked in a cajun microwave; just google it).
2. If you do go to Bourbon, park at the River Walk, go to Jackson Square, head straight to Bourbon and only turn LEFT from there... going right might not be your kind of thing... or maybe it is? (cross dresser bars were always to the right from there) 3. Get a hand grenade or hurricane for the experience alone... 4. FYI the 18 to drink loophole was closed ~15 years ago, though most places really don't care last I was there. 5. Cafe Du Monde is worth it... 6. Jump over to the West bank to the home of the tacky ashtray for a nice dive spot. 7. If you do go to Baton Rouge too, tour LSU and check out Mike the Tiger, try Sammy's on Highland, Mary Lee donuts, Coffee Call if you missed Cafe Du Monde, TJ Ribs on Acadian, and Bergeron's (pronounced 'bash rons') on 415 across the Mississippi river bridge. |
