$22.5 million fully guaranteed for Maclin at signing Posted by Mike Florio on March 12, 2015, 8:16 AM EDT AP In most cases the “guaranteed” money a player reportedly will receive is more (often much more) than the fully guaranteed money he’ll get. For Chiefs receiver Jeremy Maclin, those numbers are the name. Per a source with knowledge of the contract, Maclin’s $22.5 million guaranteed is fully guaranteed, via a $12 million signing bonus and fully guaranteed base salaries of $750,000 in 2015 and $9.75 million in 2016. The rest of the contract consists of base salaries of $9.75 million in 2017, $10.75 million in 2018, and $10.75 million in 2019, and annual workout bonuses of $250,000. The cap numbers are $3.4 million in 2015, $12.4 million in 2016, and $12.4 million in 2017, $13.4 million in 2018, and $13.4 million in 2019. It’s a two-year, $22.5 million deal with an annual team option on the remaining $32.5 million over three. |

I keep thinking "Y'know, maybe we should just outright cut Bowe rather than June 1 him so we aren't carrying his dead money next year" but then I remember that the June 1 cut on him would free up a bunch of cap this year that, if unused, would just carry over to next year and end up offsetting that dead money anyway. So the added flexibility to deal with something like a front-loaded offer sheet to Houston would be huge. If you're savvy about how you use those rollovers, you can really do some nimble cap maneuvering. I'm still just surprised by how easy the Chiefs can get out of that deal. Hell, even if everything goes sour on it, they can get out after 2 years and end up about where they are with Bowe right now - eating $9 million in accelerated cap and that's it. To get an AAV of $11 million with a signing bonus that low off the open market with teams like Oakland desperately trying to find places to spend hard cash is a damn good deal.

[QUOTE=DJ's left nut;11377900]Yeah, and by making it such a low number in year one, they effectively have reduced the year 2 number via the cap rollover provisions. Any cap space saved in year 1 carries over into year 2 and to some degree reduces that amount. That cap rollover completely changes how contracts should be structured.

So what are the excuses for Maclin if he does not replicate the stats with Smith?

Man you guys overpaid by 3-4 million per season for this guy,,, but he can get some space on the field, but Alex "Timid" Smith still will struggle to get the ball to him.

If the pieces fall into place, this is what Smith fans have been hoping for since year one. - 3 years in same system (This will be the first for Smith - 2 years was actually a novelty) - 3 years with same coaching staff (This will be a first for Smith - 2 years was actually a novelty) - Decent (not all pro) offensive line - Good (not necessarily pro-bowl) weapons... Chiefs knock all those into place, I'll offer no excuses if Smith doesn't perform well. *** edit. Sorry. After re-reading I saw that the question was "what excuse will Maclin have". That's easy, if Maclin doesn't live up to expectation, his excuse will be Alex Smith.
