Off Season Lets Talk Guns

Been a while since we had a guns n' ammo discussion.

Some of you are AR shooters Im sure. Im looking at a Colt 6920. Will be my first AR. Picked up a Glock this fall and really enjoy shooting it. Any feedback on that weapon?

Anyone else been in a buy/sell/trade mood with hardware?

If you are looking to stay on the low end I might look at a Heritage Manufacturing Rough Rider with the 6.5" barrel. I have one I use just to mess around up in the hills. I think you should be able to pick on of for around $100. http://www.heritagemfg.com/product_detail.cfm?prod_id=5

I have the 45

I got it because I like having the knock down power of a 45..I have seen what 9 and 45 do to bodies..when it comes to my life on the line I want to make sure I can stop the person

That being said you can have all the power in the world but if it isn't comfortable for you to shoot it does no good..if you can shoot them before you buy I would recommend it to see which recoil allows you to get a follow up shot off accurately the quickest

I have an XD-9 and I will be getting the XDS-9 simply because I already have a lot of 9mm. If I didn't have that I would go with the 45.

Do it!

I've wanted a 686 for years now. And in the past month and a half, I bought a new 686 4" barrel and a 686 Plus 3" barrel. Haven't had a chance to shoot the 3" yet, but the 4" is great. Shooting .38 Specials through that thing is a pleasure. Almost no recoil to the point that it feels like I'm shooting a 22 pistol. And its also the most accurate handgun I have.

So this M855/SS109 ban... Is it 5.56 ammo in general, or a particular type of 5.56 ammo? Pardon my ignorance.

So far, its only going to be the M855/SS109. But its having a trickle down effect on all other 5.56. People are stocking up on XM193 and other available 5.56 while they can.

Well the 45 would have more recoil then the 9 I don't think its debatable.

That's very true..I have shot 45 for years and have been able to manage the recoil better than most people..which is why I said that..I didn't know how much experience he had with a 45 so I didn't want to sell him short

Have you looked at the ballistics data on modern 9mm rounds? Penetration and expansion rates are almost identical to the 40 and 45 now. A lot of law enforcement uunits are switching to the 9. More rounds, less recoil, quicker target acquisition between rounds, and practically identical performance. The whole 9mm don't have stopping power is an outdated assumption.

I understand all that..it is incredible what people can do with round ballistics these days..but when you have a person charging you and you need to put them down quick do you want a bullet the size of a 9 going into someone and hoping that smaller round can hit something vital or the bigger round going in and hoping it hits something

I get what you are saying..I misused stopping power because I was typing fast and didn't think of the right word..ability to cause a larger wound cavity..is probably what I should of said

The difference in expansion size (wound cavity) is less than a 1/10th of a millimeter. Thats such a negligible difference that the abilty to accurately apply more 9 rounds down range more than makes up for the very tiny size difference.
