The $16 Burger

The wife was out and about this afternoon and I had a calorie binge on my calendar, so I was wondering what to do. And it's kind of embarrassing to admit this, but I've been liking Wendy's recently. There's one near my house, and they fixed it up really nice and it's got wifi and one of those infinite soda machines and stuff. So I put my shoes on started walking.

However, a new place has opened next door to the Wendy's. It appears to be a local chain with a few locations, and after a bit of wavering I decided to give it a shot.

Good burger overall. Good fries and free soda refills even though they didn't have Pibb or Pepper. They had signs up about their fresh burgers, never frozen, and all that stuff.

But here's my challenge. I got a BBQ burger with bacon and onions, no cheese, fries, and a drink, and the total came to slightly more than $16. If I had walked next door to Wendy's, I could've gotten the same general menu items for about $10 or so for a pre-designed combo.

I'm not sure the difference in taste warrants paying nearly double for the local joint. I'll probably just do Wendy's next time I find myself in the parking lot.

What's the most you'll pay for a good burger?

Gotta admit, the grilled cheese cheeseburger isn't my favorite concept on earth, but my beef [no pun intended] is with the amount of bread. The type of bread is a great choice. Love Texas Toast, just not 4 slices per burger.

Now I'm hungry for a Sonic Texas Toast Breakfast Sandwich.

I feel like the biggest predictor of burger greatness is the thickness of the patty. It seems like a burger with a thick patty is naturally going to be superior.

I voted $12, but if the drink is a nice brew, then I'll up to $14 range.

admit i hated to even vote, cause i gave up soda and will pass on that combo every time unless i can get w/out the soda.

Meh, it still depends. I've had plenty of thick, dry patties and vice versa.

Is this better?

Not really. I don't like the concept of it, not just the actual pic. Seems like the grilled cheeses would completely dominate the taste. And I can't see how that would be good. Too much bread and cheese.

I'd be inclined to disagree. I like a good crust on my burgers so almost prefer thin patties mashed into a flat top, over a 1/2 lb burger.

I like them either way. Thick and juicy, thin steakburger style.

Just give me a double and some fries (good fries preferably) and get the Hell out the way

You don't use four pieces of bread. You grill the cheese sandwich like normal, cook up the burger and bacon separately, open it up and shove those sumbitches in between.

Texas toast burgers are far and away the best burger on earth, followed closely by sour dough.

Damn straight.

Onions, butter, and cheese were tailor-made for Texas toast.

That better be one monstrous patty if you are slapping it on Texas Toast. 8oz+ type of patty. Otherwise, it's just too much bread.

It's the right kind of bread, Fred.

But yeah, the patty needs a minimum of 1/2" after cooking to make it work.

Is your patty square then? Because otherwise you're getting bites of just bread with a round patty.
