Covitz:Alex Smith will play entire first half of Sunday’s preseason game

Alex Smith will play entire first half of Sunday’s preseason game

Chiefs coach Andy Reid said starter Alex Smith would likely play the entire first half on Sunday night at Carolina, but the rest of the quarterback rotation has not been determined.

The starting offense struggled in the preseason opener against Cincinnati, going three-and-out, settling for a short field goal and Smith lost a fumble when sacked. Smith said he had a simple goal for Sunday night: Hold onto the football.

“That was the biggest play for me in my (time on the field),” Smith said. “You look at two third-and-shorts that we didn’t convert, one on the run play and the last on the pass play ... miscommunication there with the receivers. You just can’t have it.

“To me, two plays jumped out — one, the fumble, you just can’t have turnovers. The second one, that third-and-2 down there, in the red zone, if you convert, you have a good chance of walking away with a touchdown. Those are big downs, we know that. You have to execute those and it’s all kind of in the details.”

Yep. It's well documented that he stepped the **** up in the playoffs. But that one game doesn't excuse the mediocre regular season numbers.

Smith had a better game than Luck.

Smith played better than Luck.

Smith lost because of stupidity from the whole team in the second half.

Why didn't we run more? Why were offensive players going out of bounds with the lead instead of sliding down and running clock? Why couldn't our secondary cover anyone? Why wasn't smith letting the play clock tick all the way down?...

Denver rookie QB John Elway, on Jack Lambert, after Lambert and the Steelers knocked Elway out of his first game as a pro (1983).

More consistency of his best days maybe.

Alex had 6 games last year where he didn't throw a TD pass, compared to everyones favorite "shitbag" QB Romo, you have to go back 6 years to reach that number.

I would agree, but he got quite a bit better in the latter part of the season and of course in the playoff game. So that gives me an optimistic outlook. I'm hoping he and Reid really came together and figured things out and can continue to kick ass this season.

It also really doesn't help him that our WRs and TEs are utter trash.

Argh. I just hate reliving that game. I too have asked those questions many times. Do you think if we had Charles healthy in that game that we would have won?

I meant to mention this topic with an earlier post of yours but didnt wanna come off like a dick.

What I think people maybe forget (you) or simply refuse to acknowledge (others), is that theres a legit reason for those pedestrian early season numbers... not only was he new to the team but the system was brand new, a system widely regarded as the hardest to learn. The entire team was also learning this complicated system.

So they were still feeling their way through early on, learning each others tendencies and trying to get the system down... that led Alex to go into hardcore game manager mode, which is the right thing to do in that situation, not trying to wing it deep when you're not sure if the receiver is even gonna run the correct route, minimize turnovers to aid the defense that was rolling etc.

I dont think its coincidence that as the season wore on we seen things open up, we did end up averaging 35ppg the last seven games... nothing to sneeze at.

Davis was running the ball well. Charles might have changed the play calling but he wouldn't make pass catchers stay in bounds or improve the play of our secondary...

True. The playcalling might have made the difference though. And is it just me or did Bowe not give enough of an effort on that last 4th down sideline pass? I'm sure this was discussed in exhausting fashion here but I was too pissed to log in at the time.

I agree. Which is why I'm down with him getting more reps this preseason. I'm just saying I'd rather those reps be taken away from Daniel rather than Bray or Murray.
