Fumbling out of the opponent's end zone

I've never been a fan of this rule. When Spencer Ware fumbled that ball by the pylon yesterday and the Jets got the ball, I was sure we were gonna blow the game. The Jets didn't deserve to get the ball 1st and 10 from the 20 yard line because of that play. They need to change the rule. If it goes out of the end zone, the fumbling team gets the ball at the spot of the fumble. The defense has to recover it in bounds to gain possession. Just my 2 cents.

If the roles were reversed, would you have had a problem with it?

I saw that play, which was BIZARRE! It prompted me to do a little research.

First, here is PFT saying -- LAST YEAR -- that the whole thing is the most unfair rule in the entire game.

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com...e-in-the-game/

So, it's a weird rule, but it's not a new rule. I think it's crap, to be honest. To create a turnover in ANY OTHER circumstance, the defense needs to secure possession while in the field of play. Here, if the ball goes out of bounds without either team securing possession, suddenly it's a turnover.

It screwed the Chiefs badly there, but I think it was called correctly. They shoudl consider changing the rule, however, as it seems an unfair result really.

I don't disagree with it. Just makes ball security even more important down by the goal line.

I'm not a huge fan of it, but I don't think I'd like it any better if the rule was the opposite (e.g., offense keeps the ball).

How about a compromise rule? Fumbling team gets the ball first and ten at the twenty.

It's a dumb rule, and should really be changed. I wonder if this was a rule originally intended to prevent teams from intentionally fumbling forward into the end zone as a last ditch effort to score. The NFL should simply adapt the forward fumble rule to include the EZ, and remove this rule.

The thing is though that the offense keeps the ball if you fumble out of bounds at any other point on the field. It seems like it should be consistent, either you keep the ball if you fumble out of the endzone OR fumbling the ball out of bounds should also result in a turnover.

What if the offense got 2 pts and then had to kick off like a fg/td?

Offense gets something - defense gets something...

Denver rookie QB John Elway, on Jack Lambert, after Lambert and the Steelers knocked Elway out of his first game as a pro (1983).

Yeah, I just can't help but think there would be ways to take advantage of it. Ball security on the goal line would be less important, and any fumbles could just be punched out of bounds to retain possession.

Of course, the defense could theoretically do the same now, so I dunno.

I wouldn't hate it if it were changed, but I kind of feel like the NFL changes to much these days in general, so whatever.

It just doesn't make much sense. If he fumbled at the 1-inch line, it's still our ball. He re-gained enough control of it to touch the pylon. He kinda had it pinned on the back of his left hand, but I knew what the call was gonna be as soon as I saw the replay. Certainly can't argue the call, I just don't like the rule.

Also, speaking of calls, was anyone else shocked when they let that Jets fumble stand? I thought his elbow was down for sure.

Agreed.

It adds a little risk and drama to attempting to extend the ball over the goal line so I'm not mad about it.
