Auto Mechanics Advice Needed

I'm going through my 3rd muffler in a year on a 2003 Toyota Tacoma. I've replaced all of three of them as close to the engine (I'm not a big mechanic I'm sorry don't know the term) as possible. Could this have somthing to do with the high elevation I live in? The engine is stock so there's no extra pressure being put through it. I could understand a bad weld job on one but this is becoming a habit.

Any idea what the hell could be causing this?

This is what the replacements looked like:

The biggest pain in the ass is getting those supports through the rubber rings.

Man thats a weird problem to have. I'm suspecting some kind of emissions problem causing an occasional backfire in the exhaust. Are the spark-plugs fouling by a too rich gas/air mixture? In any event, at 200-250 dollars a pop, it might be a good time to go to Midas and get a replacement guarantee. Good luck...

The thick part of the muffler, the widest piece in the picture, the welds fail. They crack open. If I'm not mistaken I'm attachaing it to the catalytic converter. Yes, I'm sure of that. It's being attatched to the catalytic converter.

Weird. What's your daily commute like? Short drive across town or do you get on the highway for at least a little bit?

In the picture in the link you posted it's the flange on the far left end of the exhaust pipe that has two holes for bolting it up to the coverter.

They call at the end of the day that you need it, you scramble to their shop, find your bill to be for $2k more than expected, but we don't have time to argue and load up and head across the amber waves of grain....

3hrs into your task, the engine, seizes. You walk 2 miles to a ride and haul it to another dealership. They say "wow, they replaced a lot of shit that probably didn't need to be replaced....and oh by the way, the engine has no oil, so it's shot. That'll be XXXXX $$$ to replace.

They claim they didn't service it......but sonnabitch, you were 3" away, and for that bill and the orders "get it ready to go, do what needs done"......and they give it to me with no oil.

On the phone they didn't really seem to think I should be angry with them. Pompei had less red asses than I'm giving tomorrow.
helping a customer out of kc with the same situation right now...

Sucks. Shoot me a pm if you need some help/advice...
